I. I was the group lead on a bomber escort mission to bomb factories in the Brunswick area.

As the bomber formation continued towards target, calls rang out that high FW190s and BF109s were on top of the bomber formation and closing fast. They were able to make several passes by the time our fighters engaged. I turned my P-51B to the port side to see an FW190 too far below the bomber formation to attack it.

I rolled in and dove on the FW190 and pursued it to the deck.

I closed to about 200 yards and began to fire. I had several hits in the tails section, but the Nazi pilot was a very good stick and went evasive.

He banked and turned feverishly to avoid my fire. I began to get the range and connected with my 50 cal.

The last burst hit into the fuselage fuel tank. He was now trailing fuel.

I got a line great line on a deflection shot and hit him in the fuselage near the canopy and left wing root.

That shot lit him up like a Christmas Tree.

Finally, my 50 cal fire lit the fuel tank a blaze and the FW190 was all but done.

The Luftwaffe interceptor began to roll in towards the ground and...

BOOM! It was all over.
I finished the days escort mission with three kills and one assist.
