Title: The propellers from today’s auction… My eyes were bigger than my garage!
Post by: G0ALY on June 10, 2017, 10:31:08 PM
I picked up these 8 Hamilton Standard prop blades at an estate auction today.  I just got them unloaded, and I haven’t done any research yet.  So I have no idea what aircraft they may have been on.   They are 84 inches long, and a little over a hundred pounds each. I am thinking about keeping two of them and displaying them on vertical stands.  Maybe even painting them black with yellow tips and new decals to look more like they came from a warbird… Not sure yet.  Will sell the rest.  I really don’t have room for all 8.

I also picked up a spinner and chin scoop from an unfinished half-or-two thirds scale P-51 Mustang.  I’m thinking about painting them and mounting them on a wall something like this.

Just dont let the metal guy pushing the grocery cart see them.

There must be some way to find out what bird they are from. I'd like to know if you ever find out.

Is each blade 84 inches long?

If so, they would be from something large like a constellation.

That is what I thought as well. Each blade is 84 inches. Add an appropriately sized hub, let’s say 20-24 inches across and you have a roughly 16 foot diameter propeller.

I’m going to add more info here later today when I give them a quick cleaning and look for any identifying numbers on them.

Here are the numbers that repeat the most on the base of the blades:
DWG 6491A-6S
2 B5 -37297
MFG 280026 CONT. AC28744
I hope these help.
Also a pic of the Mustang spinner and chin scoop with a beer can for scale. I’m still thinking about mounting it on a wall like a deer head trophy.

Closest thing I can find from the numbers is this

SUPER CORSAIR XF2G-1 but the blade numbers are 6491A-14

Thanks!  From what I can find, these blades are identical to the ones on the Super Corsair except they are 3 inches longer and have a more squared tip.

If each blade is 85 inches that is a big prop.

Pretty sure it's constellation, a C82, or another large prop. plane of that time frame.........but I doubt even the skyraider prop. is that large so likely a multi-engine plane.

One clue would be the mustang spinner suggesting a possible link to air racing.

It's possible they are left over from a couple of cannibalized and super rare and desirable "slow nose case" gear cases that the racers put on 3350s.

These slow nose cases came from super constellations.

Just speculation as they could be from any large plane of that time........except the b36 which had props even larger.

Was there any other aviation related hardware there?

The spinner came from a scale P-51 replica that the original owner started to build over 30 years ago.  The fuselage was still hanging in his shop at the time of the sale last week.

There was other aviation hardware. I bought a WWII era aircraft antenna.  Nothing hinted at racing though.

6491a is the blade shape.

The the -6 means six inches shorter than the full size available which is a 6491a-0 at 15 feet 2 inches.

The S stands for squared and it seems this blade is then changed in length and tip shape for the application.

The -14 means the blade diameter is 8 inches shorter than the -6 so each
blade is 4 inches shorter on the F2G.

On planes this old, the variety of modifications to tip shape can be pretty big but it seems these are exactly as manufactured.

That's a lot of money for a junk hub assy.  If that was good, that price would be a steal.

I have a FB page Antique Airplane Parts Exchange, maybe I can post and see what I get a reply on what they are from.

Just a quick note. I have found photos of three different C-46 commandos where you can read these DWD numbers on the props.  I have not found any other references… So I am betting these were off of a C-46.

you could put them on a bearing hub that would allow them to freely spin. then you could use them as huge weathervane/spinny thingy's!!!
