Seafire is a 15 ENY and IX is a 20.
Seafire can carry an egg and fly off the boat, but I otherwise can't tell a difference between engine or flight performance? Are they essentially the same plane? Does one have any advantages over the other beyond the egg and ability to fly off a boat?

Spit9 is a far better handling aircraft than the sea fire.
Sea fire is just a fat version of the spitV

Spit IX is a later Merlin 61 version with a two stage supercharger meaning it has better performance at altitude. Seafire is a single stage Merlin 45 so it's performance would deteriorate the more altitude it got.
With AH, you don't see much difference as the air combat tends to take place below the best performing altitude of the Spitfire IX and where the Seafire has it's best performance.

Seafire weight about as much as a IX so its like a IX with less engine power..

Yes spit9 is faster. I think the seafire should be a 25 ENY plane.

I've read that the mk IX was capable of carrying a 500lb egg, why can't our version? I've also read about mk IX's with .50's instead of bb shooters.

Seafire is quite capable low...But at altitude it's junk...The spit 9 is one of the more fearsome planes to meet at altitude...

As said earlier, our mk IX is an early one with the merlin 61. They only had the .303s. The .50 option cane later on. But since you are lucky you already have the option of having a mk IX w .50s and bombs, its called mk XVI.

I've thought about using the 16, but I like that the 9 is mid range ENY and won't be immediately unavailable when sides are not balanced.

Well, you wont get both. Our Mk IX is a late -42 model and they only got .50s in early -44..
The Mk IX is in reality at least 4 different versions. The Brits are bad at a lot of stuff, soccer, food and proper naming different versions of fighters so there are room for a lot of confusion. The Mk IX we have is pretty much just a Mk V with a new engine and a few other modifications while the
Lf Mk IX that is our Mk XVI have a different engine, different wing, different tail etc so when talking about the Mk IX you need to know which variant of it you are talking about....

Didnt the MKlV have the most impact on the war? At least in the Far East?

You mean the mk IX? Yes it had the biggest impact imo at least. It was able to counter the 190 and from 42 and onwards it became the main spitfire version in RAF, it was also superior to LW fighters for most of the 2nd half of the war.
Mk XIV served alongside mk IX/XVI in Europe while the mk VIII served in other theathers like the far east.
