My son-in-law wants me to build him a computer to get
onto AH. The problem is that he has wifi through his phone.
If I get him a wifi mobo, should I also get him a wifi gateway or
will he need a wifi router and a wifi gateway?
Any help would be appreciated :aok

When you say WiFi through his phone, you mean that he will use the phone to provide internet access? If that is the case, then the phone acts as the router for your purposes, and provides the wifi network. You will not need to provide any hardware other than the wifi on the motherboard.

My experience with using a phone for a Wifi hotspot over a cell network connection has not been very good. Latencies are all over the place. Dropped packets are pretty significant.
A Wfifi connection is problematic enough. Adding it to cell network makes it even more so.
Not saying it cannot be done, but I would be pleasantly surprised if it worked well for him.

No... not through his cell. He intends to get access through a
ISP but for lack of a better term.... wirelessly :headscratch:

Now I am confused. Where does his phone come into play?
If he is getting access through an ISP, then that ISP usually will furnish a router.

It would be best if he could plug the computer into the router. Wireless connections are not good for Aces High.

I don't have landline internet on my road.
I use a verizon device that picks up the cell tower internet. It's the size of a thumb drive.
Mine has an antenna port, so I bought and mounted a small antenna on the 2nd story deck. It works without the antenna, but not as well.
Mine gets only the 3g signal. 4g models are available, but I can't find one that can accepts an antenna.
Weather and tree canopy seem to have the greatest effect on the signal. It's best in the winter when the trees are bare.
I get warpage only once in a while.

I have played AH with 4G connected to the computer during a time period when the ISP dug the fiber to my house, and my old ISP DSL subscription ended.
I lost 10ms but never got any packet lost (checked through a Cisco ASA 5550 firewall).

OK, with a wireless ISP, he'll have an antenna/receiver outside, and a station inside, most likely running Power over Ethernet to the outside. The station inside will have at least one ethernet port, and probably a full router/switch, and possibly a wireless LAN (802.11) as well.
As far as what he needs to get, consider the station inside to be just as if it were a cable modem from a regular ISP. The ISP will be able to tell him whether the station has a wireless LAN as part of the equipment or not (it likely does, nowadays). If so, then he won't need another router/gateway unless he wants more speed/features than provided by the built in wireless.

box he wants
I haven't researched further than what is listed because I really don't trust
my own evalution capabilities since the strokes

don't want to go further since I believe these are the heart

Rather than two mediocre video cards, get a single good one. You can get a GTX1080/8GB for the same price as two 960/4GB cards. Two cards don't give you double power and based on benchmarks the 960 only gets halfways of the performance level of the 1080 at the max.
One crucial thing to add to your list: A truly good quality power supply.

if he is in the same boat i have been for 15 years he dont have internet in his area except wirless if thats the case. then the best i have come up with is verizion i got a modem through them and have just upgraded over the years i think my current one is acalled a jetpack it plugs in USB thats how i have played for many years my ping is around 70-110 no its not the best but it works. Down side is i only got 40GB per month to use and its $15 per GB i go over. sucks because i cant download alot or use youtube much but it beats the hell outa giving time warner 20 grand to run internet out here

I use a Verizon Mifi as well, and it usually works great compared to my previous choices of dial-up and satellite. I get 4G LTE, but use a Wilson signal booster with an antenna on my roof aimed through a saddle in a nearby ridge towards the general direction of the nearest cell tower.
At least now my signal is reliable enough that I feel I can finally participate in FSO's and scenarios.

Apparently he has Spectum cable TV which I think offers net access
as well... I'll check
Also, he has decided to use the box for his biz (no pun intended biz)
but he still needs speed to bid on heavy equipment :headscratch:
I informed him, a speedy computer with a high FPS is still dependent on
his inet connection and its bandwidth
I will check out the graphis card so thx to whoever suggested it
