"The “Berlin Express” P-51B Mustang achieved legendary status in an epic World War II dogfight in Paris in 1944, piloted by American Bill Overstreet, who flew the aircraft under the Eiffel Tower in hot pursuit of a German fighter. Overstreet eventually downed the German Messerschmitt Bf 109G and eluded heavy enemy fire while escaping the battle with his P-51B Mustang “Berlin Express” intact.
More than 70 years after this landmark moment, the “Berlin Express” is making a historic transatlantic flight from the U.S. to Duxford, England with Stallion 51 Corporation’s owner and USAF Heritage Flight Alumni Lee Lauderback in the cockpit, following the same route it took in 1942 as part of the military troop buildup in the UK during WW II. The four-day, 5,470-mile journey began June 28 in Texas and will conclude at Duxford Airfield on July 4, where Dan Friedkin will then pilot it in the Flying Legends Airshow on the right wing alongside his longtime Horsemen Flight Teammates Steven Hinton and Ed Shipley on July 8 & 9."
The first leg of the journey is underway from Houston to Kentucky, check out the links below to follow the Berlin Express!

Is this the actual Berlin Express or a different airplane in that paint? Super awesome if it's the original airplane.

The restored fighter is based around the remains of P-51B 43-24837. This Mustang flew with the 9th Air Force’s 363rd FG out of RAF Staplehurst in Kent, England. It crashed in Beckley after the pilot was forced to bail out during a training exercise on June 10th, 1944.

Why did they use white walls, other than the classy look?
-
White absorbs less heat generated by the sun.
The cars copied the look as was thought to be cool/neat or what ever word was used back in the day.
-
Yea it was the cool thing to do back then. Much like the different rims people use today to personalize a vehicle. :old:

Do know how the white walls were manufactured? Just curious since everything seemed to be in short supply during WWII and wonder if there was more effort or cost to manufacture the white walls. Thanks!
-
Tires are naturally white. Black (carbon??) is added to the rubber to make the tires black.

What's the matter with the car I'm driving?
"Can't you tell that it's out of style?"
Should I get a set of white wall tires?
"Are you gonna cruise the miracle mile?
Nowadays you can't be too sentimental
Your best bet's a true baby blue Continental."
Hot funk, cool punk, even if it's old junk
It's still rock and roll to me

According to this article for N167F, it appears that Bud Anderson's "whitewalls" were painted on with "white barn paint."

Klingan said on Saturday it took off went around once and then hurried back and landed because the cockpit came off. :(
