While I was researching 602 Squadron Spitfires recently I found a photo of this 601 Squadron Hurricane. It is not only useful for the Hardest Day but is an interesting scheme in its own right. Also if ever a plane needed a "go-faster stripe" its the Hurricane. :)
601 was a reserve squadron of the RAF formed in 1925 by a group of rich young men and so was nicknamed "the Millionaires Club", although during the war attrition and transfers from other squadrons soon made the squadron no different from any other in class make-up.
P3675 was the 601 Squadron Hurricane Mk I flown by Squadron Leader Michael Robinson during the Battle of Britain. Robinson who was the 1st Baron Robinson of Kielder Forest rose to the rank of Wing Commander, was awarded the DSO, DFC and French Croix de Guerre and had scored 14 kills prior to his death in April 1942.

Very cool. Paul Richey's book that was completed by Norman Franks, called "Fighter Pilot's Summer" talks about Michael Robinson extensively. Billy Fiske was 601 as well, the first American to die in the B of B. They were in combat with 602 against Stuka's and 109s on "The Hardest Day'.
