Title: HUD Configuration
Post by: nrshida on August 25, 2017, 01:26:12 PM
Now that I'm over a hundred years old in AH years, and the game becomes increasingly a sport for me - like crazy golf - I would like to be able to customize the numeric HUD. Specifically the colours, positions and presence or absence of elements. Would be nice to also adjust the translucency like with the gunsight.

Especially I find the translucent white lacking in contrast.

+1.  Independent on/off for elements for sure.

Wiley.

You know you can move the HUD element around that has the block for those readouts, right? You can also toggle them on and off one at at time already? Check under flight settings.

Cool!  Thanks.

I know because I did it for BOB. Turns out to be a little useful for bomber gunning and long missions where you're in F3. For fighters, blech. I turn that off.

I think there was a slider for opacity. Can't recall if there was one for color/tint.

Best custom setting it turning the stupid thing off. Can't understand why someone thought that was a good idea. I hope no more gamey crap like it finds its way into the game.

agreed 100%, mak, until I had to sit in bomber guns for 7 hours in BOB. Then I put on at least alt and speed for navigation purposes.

Please give us option to display selected weapon / ammo count and or E6B time remaining info on the side hud.

I think it's supposed to supply for the deficiency in feeling you would get from a real plane. I myself like it, not the ladder but the data. You can of course turn it all off if you like.

That's going way too far, IMO. We don't want this to try to replicate arcade games like warblunder.

And sidewinders, and power-ups, and lasers, and Bluetooth.

Ah the slippery slope argument. You have presumably turned all yours off LilMak?

Only asking for optional formatting of the data you would receive in other ways if you were in a real plane.

Ideally I'd like some of this to be graphical, like a bar graph to show your G. With numbers you have to cognitively process those first.

Yep all off... at least until I hear how others are gaming it. Those little round gauges in the panel already provide all that information. You're never going to get the equivalent of real flight in a home simulation no matter how many crutches you add. This is a WWII combat sim not an F22 sim.

Thank you LilMak, but my eyesight is failing.  Without the hud I cannot effectively read my altitude or speed.  I'm not looking for an advantage over a guy that sees better than me, I just want access to the same information he has with his better eyesight.  I want to continue to play this game with my failing eyesight and still be reasonably competitive,  Those with 20/20 vision, their gunnery should still be more effective because of their better eyesight.

Respectfully I don't think it's trying to be. G meter on the HUD is a great substitution for feeling how hard you're pulling and the airspeed - for instance - a great substitute for the wind noise, change in control stiffness or other cues you would get.

End of the day, it IS a game buddy. Most AH players probably play in barefeet, watching the TV in the background and with a soda or coffee in their left hand.

Wind noise and Gs are already accounted for. Not only with gauges which you can or cannot see but through speakers and the blackouts. Adding it to the HUD is redundant and pointless in my opinion. As is the HUD itself.

It is a game and a lot of things are already given to players in the name of playability. We already have tools that are typically not available to modern pilots with millions of dollars of avionics. I've been playing this game and on these message boards for quite some time and the HUD has never been any kind of regular wish.

My main concern is not that it actually exists (don't like it but can accept it) but that it can be used as a tool to game the game. The more customizable it becomes, the greater chance that will happen in my opinion.

Sound is unavailable to me and my Sidewinder's been dismantled for a long time. I really like the data on the HUD but it sounds like we have different views on the game. I'd just prefer to arrange the individual positions and colours and perhaps font if possible.
