Title: HE rounds and tanks
Post by: DmdJJ on August 31, 2017, 10:48:11 AM
The other night I ran out of AP rounds during a tank battle and used my remaining HE rounds against another tank. The HE rounds just ricochet off the other tank. Shouldn't they explode on contact with the object they hit regardless of the material?  Just asking if this is a known bug.
Thanks

I like to shoot the ground in front of them.

It's well known, and to the best of my knowledge has never been officially answered as to why exactly it takes place.

I don't believe it's a bug, as it's universal to all HE rounds, regardless of the caliber and gun firing it, including the FlaK 36's on airfields, which presumably have a different ballistic model, due to the presence of randomization of point of impact.

Its my personal belief that it's done for consistency of observation of hits from the player's end. I haven't played the new version, but ricochets had a distinct visual hit sprite from penetrating hits, and additional it is possible to penetrate thin enough armor with HE rounds of sufficient velocity (functioning effectively as APHE rounds).

Thus I believe it's intentionally done just for consistency.

Depending on the tank you are in, and the target you are shooting at an HE round will kill a tank.. Example an HE round to the rear of a panzer from another panzer or M4 will kill it..

So if you study the tanks armor and gain experience, you can find out what you can and can not kill with HE.

Furthermore if you know you can not hit the parts you need to hit, shoot the tracks and disable the enemy tank. HE works well to kill tank tracks.

I agree that the HE should explode as apposed to bouncing off, but if they did that in this game, you could "track" a guy with enough hits to the TOP of the turret, because of the splash damage of our tank HE rounds.

For HE to work you must get penetration. HE will even bounce off of the M3. If you want to test HE just go offline and set all drones to your tank of choice and have fun shooting them up.

Offline drones are not the same as in game.. Don't let anyone tell you they are..

A tiger 2 AP at the wrong angle will bounce off an M3. And an M3 will also TAKE an AP round or two in places (not just tracks) from a T2 (the biggest gun in the game)

I have also seen guys MISS with HE hit low and blow up a tank with enough shots (let that sink in too) damage is damage when it is enough i guess. I have had guys shoot the ground in front of me with HE and kill all entry level tanks but a T34-76.

I personally have killed werbs and both types of Panzers Shermans M18's and any other "soft" GV with HE from LVT's.

practice in game, review films, auto film sorties!
