I wonder what happened to the pilot, witnesses say they saw a pilot in the plane when it sank, the cockpit appeared to be closed as well.

How many variants of the N1K2-Ja's were built? We know the main production model is the J and the Ja fixed a lot of problems of the J.

According to wiki:
423 N1K2-J + K builds, with 2 N1K3-J, 2 N1K4-J, 1 N1K4-A prototypes.

Looking at the N1K2-Ja specs I imagine it would be perked in AH3.  High altitude fighter with ability to carry 4x250kg.

At Udvar-hazy, there is a nice one.

A japanese guy was photographing it from evey possible angle.

He also did the same thing to "conquest 1", the race plane.
