Title: Considering returning
Post by: Paladin3 on September 03, 2017, 09:03:48 AM
But I am at a loss every time I go to pick out a new machine. The old one died and I'm wanting to run aces, fallout 4, skyrim and others. I've got about 2-3 grand to spend. Does anyone have any recommendation about what to look for off the shelf? My last machine was an asus and did great for years. I don't want to build one and haven't found anywhere local to build one I am comfortable with. I am considering VR....

Recommendations?

For best performance in AHIII get something with an I7 CPU, Nvidia 1080 or 1080Ti video card. The original Rift is available for $365 now and the touch controller version is $399. You'll still have room in the budget for a nice monitor for desktop gaming.

That's a tough one, kinda. Your budget is plenty and it's common knowledge what it takes for a VR capable rig.

The biggest issue is that <Brand name> systems most often aren't high end enough to meet your requirements. A local builder show would be the best alternative for one who doesn't want to do the job himself, but as I understand there's no reputable builders at your whereabouts. That's understandable, my home town of 70000 inhabitants has 3 shops that also build, but for people living in the very outskirts of town have a 100 km ride one way to place the order.

Depending on where you live there's been talk about US based online builder shops who allow you to tailor the rig. After finding one you like, the next step would be to compile a rig and let it be evaluated here. Or the other way, let the community do the planning based on what the shop has to offer.

Cyberpower builds nice rigs. MARK4 has had his for a few years with out issue and we just bought my Dad a low end machine to keep him out of trouble  :) They are customizable to fit your budget, built and tested before shipping out to you and they have very good support.

They do all the work you have all the fun! https://www.cyberpowerpc.com/category/gaming-pcs/

Paladin, you can find companies that will build custom PCs for you if you don't want  to assemble it yourself, go to PCPartPicker and figure out what you want, then start shopping around at the various custom builder sites.  I've used a local shop for 20 years now, which is gamer focused, and for 50$ they'll assemble everything and load the OS, latest drivers, and test it for a couple days to ensure there is no DOA parts.  Great way to go over a factory HP/etc type box, and as others have said, there are lots of options on builders already started here.  VR is a great option now too, I'd go for at least a 1080 if you plan on going that route, and the cost to access it is at an all time low right now too, less than 1/2 of what I paid last year when they came out.  Just get the Rift, not the Vive, if you're into cockpit games.  Budget wise, you can go VR/Rift, and build pretty much the "tits" gaming system right now, a 1080ti with a 7700k CPU with SSDs and so on.

Guys I appreciate it and I apologize for the slow, slow reply. I'm working 70 - 80 hours a week and am on call through the week and some weekends. It is just crazy the life I jumped into. However, I finally broke the other day and ordered a machine. It will be here in about a week. I'm working this weekend to make some room for it and get a small desk set up. Then... Good grief I have to install everything, tweak settings, and see if any of it works. I really am hoping to come fly for a month and see how Aces is. I hope things have gotten a lot better since I have been gone and there are a lot of old callsigns I'll recognize. It has been depressing seeing people fall and not be able to be part of the community to say goodbye.

So, cheers, I hope to see some of you fella's soon.

Thanks gang. Hope to see quite a few old hands. We will see. It was the community that kept me there as long as it did. Many I see aren't here anymore - a lot of which have passed. Hope to see you guys though by the first of December.
