Title: Watch out US eastern seaboard.....Irma
Post by: icepac on September 04, 2017, 07:03:38 AM
Current track threatens to put a dent into savings and checking accounts from florida to maine and "the islands".

For guys salty about my posts on hurricane preparation/evacuation........I may get my chance to show you how it's done.

Puerto Rico is sure to get some action and I really hope it doesn't swing into the gulf and further complicate disaster recovery resources for the gulf states.

If the keys and Jacksonville get wrecked, I'm giving up on ever getting wings...

Good luck eastern seaboard. Board up, be ready, and don't hesitate to get out! I've been out cleaning debris after Harvey in one of the worse off areas, and I'll tell you right now, assume anything you don't take with you is lost. That includes the ability to use power or water.

This storm still has a chance of going into the GOM, don't count that out.  Either way I think it's highly unlikely that it goes OTS and it will impact mainland US as a major.

12Z GFS and CMC same doom for So. Fla.  Euro should run soon, hopefully it still has a more easterly track.

Puerto rico in trouble.

Plywood gone at most stores here in south florida already.

If this comes ashore with full force featuring cult jam with lisa lisa, then it's time to take a vacation away from florida.

Loading what I can't lose into this apocalypse vehicle and parking it in the big concrete structure at palm beach international airport.

Sure glad I sold that ludwig chrome over wood octa plus drumset a while ago..........leaves a lot of space for papers and such.

The GFS does a horrible job with land/water and its current projected strength is likely 30mb to high for a Florida landfall.

Too many variables this far out though.  If this thing jogs a little further South and hits Hispaniola it may be a fart in the wind after going through those hurricane killing mountains.  Picture will be more clear in 2-3 days.

Prices on this caprice and the buick roadmaster wagons are going one way........up.

I get offers to buy it every time I drive it.

This one has cop shocks, cop sway bars, two spare tires, spare ECU/sensors/distributor/alternator/fuel pump in a box, and 255/60s on steel wheels meaning I can corner pretty hard and jump curbs without damage if necessary while getting 24mpg on the highway and 18 in town.

I had prepped a big LS motor for it but the 24mpg is really nice at this time so the motor waits.

Everybody I know down here is stupid and will likely wait until the winds are 50mph before they get the bright idea to "evacuate" and then have to ride out the hurricane on I95 in a traffic jam.

I'm telling them go fuel their cars and buy some water at the supermarket and maybe the sight of empty shelves, no fuel available, and people running around crazy will smack some reality into them.

So instead of a nice 6 day vacation out of state, they will wallow in despair with no power and unable to navigate the streets while their fat son eats all the food reserves before the eye even appears over them and wondering why his Iphone 7 has no reception and a dying battery and why burger king isn't open.

Of course, now that I've posted this, the storm will swerve away and all the lazy morons will act like they knew it all along.

Its gaining strength fast and will likely reach cat 5 today or tomorrow. Winds currently at about 150 mph and increasing.

175 mph right now, it seems as though Irma wants to kill Florida.

It will be a hard time for those in the way, the pace at wich it is gaining strength is amazing, was a cat 3 around 24 hours ago. Seems like it either is going for a direct hit on Florida or goes more west and hit Cuba and then Florida..

That is a wise idea, most forecasts now shows a direct hit on florida. And Irma is at this point a lot stronger than Andrew...

I bailed out of FL just ahead of Hurricane Frances in 2004.  My apartment building on the intracoastal was destroyed and most folks there lost everything.  I was safely in Ohio when it hit and didn't even have to fight traffic to get out on I95 just a few days before the storm.

No shame from me on playing it safe.

Florida needs a good "cleansing" of stupid people. It certainly isn't the Florida I spent summers in during the 60's and 70's.

cool website.  Notice the lower co2 concentrations in china and the norther hemisphere.  CO2 is the limiting factor for growth given adequate sunshine and temperature.  The warmer earth gets, the more co2 life uses.  :x

GFS is moving the system back towards the gulf stream.  This is not necessarily good, landfall over cuba would diminish the storm, if the warm core goes between the bahamas and florida, that thing could wind up and slam the carolinas.  Looks like the storm will wedge between the bermuda high and the large canadian high coming down.  I say watch out miami to the outer banks.  :salute

My outfit asked for travel team volunteers this morning. I'm up for another trip. No details as yet, but plans are being prepped and resources studied. I haven't seen this level of "nerves" since Katrina and Rita.

Either way, it is going to an interesting few days.

The Sun gets hot, two strong  X-class flares over past hours, both emitted from sunspot facing the Earth; X-2 and second X-9, the strongest in decades. Here goes the power grid, HQ down, lights out soon.

The hurricane is located the area of absorption facing the Sun , i read something about this strong X-ray flux can affect the atmospheric conditions.  http://www.solarham.net/globald.htm

I was supposed to be down in Tx this week for work, but they held off on that for after Irma hits....probably going to be down in Florida now.

I was down for Andrew in 1992 which imho was much worse than Katrina (was down for that also) With Katrina there was still standing structures...Andrew was just a debris field. It looked like a 60mile wide F4 tornado ran up the state.  Irma is no joke for sure....just as strong as Andrew. Hopefully those mountains in Cuba will scour off some of her power.

Anyone down there worried about having enough drinking water...just a helpful tip. Get gallon Ziploc storage bags and fill your freezer with them....Will keep the food cold in case of power outages, and a good source of emergency drinking water if needed  :aok

Stay safe

Seems to be a relatively dry hurricane.  3 day forecasts are showing between 10 and 15 inches for the Eastern coastline of Florida, while the Western coastline is predicted to get 2 to 10 inches of ran.

Contrast that with Harvey who dumped over 50 inches of rain, during a 3 day period, in South Texas.

Winds are another story.  Irma looking like a bad girl.  Hopefully she will continue to diminish.

It sure does Sim. Just once id like to go and meet the wonderful people of this country...when things are going good. Sadly we only see them when things are at there worse.

This miserable witch decided to track farther west, possibly affecting the entire length of Florida, and isn't supposed to loose any energy scrubbing the Cuban mountains, and may gain strength before landfall given the 90degree deep water off Florida. One time im hoping the forcasters are wrong

I only hope and pray that all the building code upgrades that were mandated after Andrew were indeed done....

You headed there SIM?

I prepped 3 houses (2 with wood because no shutters) but securing my garage door was the biggest task.....mostly because of the heat and trying to engineer a solution that would withstand what were projected to be 150mph winds.

On tuesday, I was in the hospital getting a "stent" installed because of a kidney stone that was impacted which kept me from starting on monday like I preached.

I credit being an opiate lightweight for being able to finish by thursday at dinner.....leaving at least one day later than I wanted but I made it to atlanta tonight.

No flying out......everything full or overbooked.

The drive was done driving secondary roads that paralleled I95 after running into a parking lot 2 miles from my house.

US1 was empty which blew my mind and we averaged 45mph all the way to atlanta.

Really can't believe a road that ran within a mile of a dead stopped interstate would be empty but it was like that all the way up.

My cars are parked in the middle of the elevated parking structures at palm heach international airport.

Still wish I could have started earlier and I look forward to the storm moving off making this work not having been necessary.

The most difficult part of this ordeal was convincing my girl to evacuate.

I couldn't believe that the secondary roads were nearly empty.

It was an awesome alternative to the hellish stop and go on I95 and I75 with great scenery and sightseeing.

Another advantage was the availability of restrooms and food compared to having to pee on the side of I75 with an audience.

From the side roads we could catch glimpses of the interstate highways packed with cars and a startling amount of cars on the shoulders out of fuel with the roadside assistance guys going from stopped car yo the next stopped car like hummingbirds giving them enough fuel to get to the next exit.

We put two non leaking gas cans in the trunk which we would have needed if we sat idling on  the interstates for 3 days but
the small towns had short lines for fuel.

In the short times we were on the interstates we saw a lot of light rear enders and chumps recklessly streaking down the shoulders.

Now the trick will be judging the correct time to come back but I believe people returning to florida will not be compressed into the tiny 3 day time window that they were during evacuation.

Of course, gonna have a pretty strong storm here in atlanta on tuesday.

Those pics of the islands are intense........hope everybody is well.

At 2330 pressure was 968 MB at my house, wind gusts to 85mph. The subdivision were I live suffered very minor damage, a couple of screens, and some small trees that were planted poorly. My shutters are already down and in the garage.

Hoping all of you in Florida made it through OK, with not too much damage....

My oldest daughter lives in Middleburg, Fl on Black Creek at North Fork.... She probably has lost everything pretty much... Flood level was already at 24+ feet at 9 am this morning, expected to crest over 26 ft....later today

My youngest daughter just lost power around 5 am, she and my granddaughter are doing good

Their Mom's business started flooding yesterday in Jacksonville... then had a tree limbs come through her roof into her kitchen this morning....

Crap happens..... If you evacuated, I would probably wait a good 6 to 7 days if not longer, depending on how bad your area got hit...

We have an office building on Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Yes, we still have it.

Hurricane Ike destroyed it in 2008 (I think) and when we rebuilt it we did so with a BIG hurricane in mind.  I was moaning and groaning about the cost at the time.

Grand Turk was in the worst quadrant of the storm when Irma hit them.  It hit as a Cat 5 (which starts at 157 mph) with 185mph sustained winds with gusts to 220mph.

All comms are down but one of our managers has a Sat phone (for just this reason) so we know that all our staff are safe and that the office building has minimal damage (some leaking in the kitchen area apparently).

I don't quite honestly understand how everyone made it through that, we'll see what injuries and damage there is before getting too excited.

I'm getting some word from places on Provo that made it thru pretty well.  Being on the leeward side helped I'm sure but they'll be planting trees instead of burying humans.

I was just there 2 weeks ago and the next trip down was supposed to be November. I'm sure it'll get moved up now but I'm not getting much for human loss right this moment with our affiliations.

Apparently the TCI government did a stellar job in getting everyone prepared and helping to keep them safe.  Good to hear.  The governor has stated there have been no fatalities in the TCI.

Thank everyone who has been sending me PMs and thank you for the prayers and thoughts and support for my oldest daughter, Jamie, Who lost nearly everything...

Her Aunt asked her to stop the gofundme page her Mom asked Jamie to make, because her Aunt Nikki has/had tallied up the loss of what was destroyed and started her a new one

I prepped for a cat-5 and getting jeers from workmates who think they did the correct thing because a small sliver of luck came their way.

I'm still glad it didn't hit here hard but these guys need a wake-up call.

I agree with you about the wake up call

Not sure how much more my oldest daughter can handle if another traumatizing event was to happen anytime soon

Last year she lost 2 births then after thanksgiving her ex wanted a divorce just after 5 yrs married (I actually was happy, but never told her) then Straight winds / tornadoes came through from storms from Louisiana and destroyed 1/2 the garage by dropping tree(s) that fell centering the garage and her Mazda 6 that was Parked just outside completely totally it this past February

Now total loss of the waterfront home she was renting on a lease... She was basically starting over since moving down there from NC after splitting with her ex

I can tell you this.... I have depleted all my finances, having to Max out 4 credit cards and even draw on my overdraft protection trying to help both of my daughters and granddaughter

Not much more I can do, since I'm disabled now (since 2009) and am trying to take care of 2 of my parents both with extremely bad health....

But I raised my girls to be strong and know how to keep moving forward...is frustrating and depressing, but we'll get through this
