Title: HOSTILES
Post by: oakranger on September 10, 2017, 08:03:47 PM
If there are any movies i enjoy more than WWII, it would be western frontier 1800 century.  And Christian Bale makes it so dam good.

Looks like a poor man’s DANCES WITH WOLVES to me.   Was it good?

I loved DWW.  Still one of my favorite all-time films.  Probably one of the best westerns ever made—if not films in general.  I’m worried I will get my hopes up.   I liked THE MISSING, too, though.  It wasn’t a let down despite my worries...

Yes I thought it was very good. It's a pretty long movie, but it went by quickly to me.
Don't want to give any spoilers away though.

Long films are the best.  Looks like I have to go see this one.

I wasn’t a big fan of “Waltz’s with Coyotes” but I love a good western themed flick.

I’d say you’re in quite the minority there...

I've not seen the movie either. I tried watching it on TV but got bored with it pretty quick. Was glad I never paid anything to turn it off.

It’s epic.  You missed out.

Nope didn't miss out. Didn't like it so watched something else.

No, you REALLY missed out.

But then, I am not surprised people these days won’t watch it.  If you don’t have 25 cuts a minute it is considered “boring” or something.

DWW is one of the finest films EVER made.   Exceptions prove the rule, though.    Can’t please everybody.

Meh.  DWW was good.  I watched it in theater and loved it when I was a teenager.  I may have rewatched it once since.

I can totally understand why someone might not enjoy it though.  It was a relatively slow movie.  In much the same way I don't enjoy most movies about 18th or 19th century France or England, I can appreciate someone not enjoying a movie like that.

What people expect out of a movie has definitely changed though.

Hadn't heard of Hostiles, I may have to go hunting for it, it looks decent.

I enjoy a slow pace when appropriate.    I'll take the Savage chewing out scene in "Twelve O'clock High" (zero cuts) or the iconic umbrella dance by Gene Kelly in "Singing in the Rain" (six cuts?) over anything I've seen in the last twenty years.

My main regret is I didn't see DWW in the theater.  If I had it might have hit me even harder than it did.   I realize it requires some suspension of disbelief but that's what most movies are for.   I'm like the title character in that I lament the passing of the frontier so to speak.  I used to be able to drive for miles and not see another soul.    Can't come close to that any more where I'm from.  It's unfortunate.

But I prefer a creek rustling to traffic noise.  Stars in the sky over street lamps.  A camp fire over headlights.

Probably one of the best westerns ever made

I liked DWW but have a hard time categorizing it as a western... more a romantic fantasy based in an old west setting.

I just watched Tombstone on cable the other day.  While not the best of the genre that's a western.

That's a pretty reasonable assessment.  What's funny to me is, I don't consider Tombstone to be "a great movie" particularly, but it's one of my favorite movies of all time.  Unforgiven is both, IMO.

I hate it when people ask me if something's a "good movie" or not.  My usual response is whether it entertained me or not.  For example I love all of Tarantino's movies, but I don't really get why people slobber all over him as an "auteur", and that doesn't really matter to me anyways.  Same with "The Boondock Saints".  That's another of my favorite movies, but I can't really say it was "good".

It’s a Western.   That category is broad enough to include romance.   Heck, many, if not most, Westerns are romances/love stories at their core.

If you’re looking toward one closer to stereotype I enjoyed “Open Range”—another Costner piece.  Hard to beat Robert Duvall in ANYTHING.

Which is one of many reasons why "Lonesome Dove" is the best of all western films.

I didn't cry when Bambi's mom died.  The end of that miniseries got me good.  Duvall and Jones were simply amazing.

Technically a mini-series...

I actually never saw the whole thing.  Crazy right?

Tommy Lee Jones is a great actor.   Funny I mentioned “The Missing” earlier in which he stars...

Dances With Wolves is a great movie, my wife hates it.

I agree that Tombstone isn't a great movie, but it has its moments that are great.  Val Kilmer was great in it, the rest not so much.
