I've been playing since '02 and I still can't hit shinola with a Wirb. I hold fire till 1.5k or less, have tried a Wirb gunsite, lead my targets and rarely get a hit or kill on a flying bandit.
On the flip side, put a 2 week noob below me on the field in a Wirb, and they'll usually manage to damage or kill me from 1k +...consistently.
So what is the noob doing that I'm not? Yes, I've practiced offline with the drones...they're too far away for me to hit.

Have you enabled the lead computing sight offline? clipboard>options>arena setup>Environment>arena settings>double click on Flag mode>enable lead computing sight.
I imagine the icon saying "MAX" and I can hit the plane from far off. :D The lead computing sight can give you a little indication of distance and lead of target. It's easier to just plan the enemy's path of flight and start a stream and let the plane fly through it.

You could drop into the TA and ask that Morfiend guy to help!
He will fly around as a target and you can turn on the LCG and see exactly where to shoot. He might even be persuaded to come in at different angles so you can see the difference in lead required for the shots. Or you could just grab a buddy and do the same thing! Basic flight area has vehicles available at most bases except A1,to turn on LCG press ctrl +tab to enable friendly lock, then just tab the targeted plane or vehicle!

Max,
I made the wirble reticle centered to the 512x512 mask which makes it center at about 200yds on the offline target. I recently moved the cross bar down to center it at 1000yds. My hits went up because most of our shooting is between 1000-1500. It stops being usable for the LCD green cross at that point.
I made an offline terrain called gunnery which you can download from the custom terrain host. Once you do that, go offline to A1 and choose a wirble, spawn NW. You will be on a mesa with all the drones flying as close as 800 to your spawn. Turn on the LCG sight and learn wirbel gunnery. It will surprise you with some angles that you are shooting 180 from how you should really lead the drone.

They are not all that easy to master, for a fact. You would be surprised how far you need to lead a plane in a Perpendicular line of flight. The cannon shells slow an awful lot at that range. Like mentioned before, the LCD in off line or even with Morfiend is easiest way to nail it down. I am fairly confident you will go "DANG, its true. Have to lead a WHOLE LOT more". Heck, the targets are pretty much way out side of the sight box. I use the "Swing Through" method. I have better luck with Wirb that way, lots more than the "Constant lead" method. Sort of like shooting Skeet or Trap with shot gun. "Swing through" is sort of self explanatory. Now when I say "Constant lead" I mean put your sights where you believe they are going to be in. That is just the first step in this method. When you think they are going to fly through your zone, start turning the turret at same rate of lead. DO NOT stop turning it either. These turrets are not the fasted out there. Hard to regain any lead once you fall behind. You can tell if you need more lead, just watch the tracers. It is just that "Swing Through" is what I am use to. Shot a lot of Skeet, so its in my comfort zone so to speak. And YES, same rule applies to this method as well to some degree. You swing through the target and start shooting when think your target is in your zone, But keep swinging. Its that follow through, that can pay dividends. I basically swing through and keep shooting, sometimes speeding up my swing in process. This works better on further targets like around 700 as closure is faster than the turret and cant keep up. I just start my swing earlier, sort of a "Lead Turn" that you use in ACM.

Hate to bother you but I have no idea what you mean? What is the "cross bar" you moved down? Is this a new sight,if so what is its label in sight folders? What is the "mask" definition? Thinking you are talking about the sight box? Any way, hope i didnt bother ya,too much anyway. Hated to do that, as it steals time with your arena mapping! :rock

Thanks folks!
morfiend is your schedule still weeknights after 9pm eastern?
-
Buster, is your sight listed in the game gun sight menu? If not, how can it be acquired?
I’ve noticed that in AH3 I have to lead a great deal more than AH2.

Not to be argumentative but I believe it is only your perception that makes you think you need to lead the target more in AH3. The physics did not change, the way you see it did.

Could be true. I do have a shiny new rig with a 1070 card which presents the game in a whole new light. My perception is that a lot more lead is required to achieve hit sprites. Whatever the reality is, that’s my perception. Thanks for the input!

Morf is always a lot of fun to fly around with and shoot up. He takes it so well. :rofl

The physics did not change, the way you see it did.
Which as, in the end, the effect of having to 'lead more' if your point of reference was the edge of the screen for example. I vaguely remember the first Ostwind tutorial I read back in 2005, which told you to keep the enemy at the edge of the screen at standard zoom.
With a changed default FOV in AH3, that would not work anmyore, you would have to lead more than that.

Bustr I have the gunnery setup and rdy to go. Where do I find your Wirb gunsite?

Yes Max most week nights between 9pm and 11 pm est.

This is from my google drive. Just unzip into the sights folder with all the other gunsights. Then choose it for the positions on the wirble, I never remember which position is the 20mm gunner's position.
If you try and use the lead computing gunsight, this is not centered for it. The green cross bar in this gunsight is centered at 1000yds. As you shoot at the drones, you will see that it lines up the best at 800-1200 as you lead. The green lead computing sight will show you that at some tracking angles you have to aim under the aircraft, not in line with it. Having both gunsights now, you can work with lead computing green cross to get a feel for off angles. Then with the 1000yd centered so your effective range zeros at 1000yds.

Thanks for the link Buster!

:aok Thanks Bustr

The lead should be about twice as much as you see in there too. Drones fly around 200, most in the arena fly full/wep so that is closer to 400.

Also a good point to consider. Thanks!

The square area framed by the osti and wirble gunsight is 180Mil wide. In the osti that makes for a good lead sight against drones out to 1200yds, I was just testing it. The gunnery terrain helps you alot to spawn up on the mesa and use the lead computing cross to see this. After that, your shooting becomes problematical and better against on coming or leaving flight profiles. The dispersion of the 37mm in the osti is your problem at longer ranges and why it always works better against bombers 1200-2500. And max range in the game is only 2700.

Have you enabled the lead computing sight offline? clipboard>options>arena setup>Environment>arena settings>double click on Flag mode>enable lead computing sight.
I see "FlightModeFlags" where lead computing sight can be enabled, but don't see the green crosshair when in a Wirb. Is there something else I need to do?

After that you have to select the enemy you are shooting at with TAB.

That works. :salute

Nice sights Bustr. Thanks!

I did all that-except I didn't see anything flag mode or e l c s[[saw country flags and and other types of flags but no E L C S

Nice sights Bustr. Thanks!
Just remember to save that zip file somewhere or, if you ever loose the folder structure and files from the game, they are not the original wirbel and osti sights I created for AH3 to work with the LCG function offline.

set your max texture size to 1024 to see tracers and hit sprites better

Lunatic,the settings for LCG are under OPTIONS>ENVIRONMENT>ARENA SETTINGS>FLIGHT MODE FLAGS>change>Lead COMPUTED SIGHT>OK>SAVE

I guess I'm just stupid. I can't figure it out thanks for trying.

Will do. Good idea.

Have you enabled the lead computing sight offline?
What!!?? I've been playing this game about 7 years now and never knew this. I'm pretty decent in a Wirb, but I just use good old fashioned lead. I tried finding this flag mode and couldn't find it. Would love more info on enabling a computing sight?????
Now I'm wondering what other gunnery tricks I've been ignorant of.

Germ, go to Offline, then open the clipboard;
select options
select Arena Setup
select Environment
select Arena Settings
Scroll down till you see "FlightModeFlags" double click
That brings up a window to allow you to select many different "Offline" features, including the "Lead Compensating Gun Sight".
Hope this helps. :salute

You ARE trying it OFF LINE? Its right there, bud. You may be a LUNATIC, but that is not an IDIOT. Give yourself some credit Sir!

I have a clear screen overlay that figures for crossing speed/lead and distance/drop. Actually one for a wirb, one for an ostwind, and one for a 37 mm. Whenever I feel rusty, I'll tape it to my screen to help me get back in the ball park. :devil
