Title: Most esoteric P-38 question - balls to the wall!
Post by: nrshida on October 11, 2017, 02:48:37 AM
So this is really going to sort out the experts. Does anyone know the diameter of the balls on the throttle of the P-38? In any other real planes you've flown, is there some sort of agreed standard size for ball-shaped throttle knobs (do hope Zack doesn't read this thread).

Have a very good reason for asking!

Probably 1 1/2" and others smaller at 1" I think.

Might have guessed a little larger. Anyone have this dimension for me?

Probably going to have to have a known dimension, open the drawing in CAD, measure the known dimension, measure the red balls, and apply a correction factor.

Truth or Fiction?  (For those of you who have seen Kentucky Fried Movie, this show is called BULLSH*T or NOT)

The P-38 knobs of which you speak are golf-ball sized.  "Several manufacturers of sporting goods re-tooled their existing plants and machinery to produce plastic knobs, handles, switches, and other small items that were needed for war production.  Wherever possible, existing dies and molds were used both as a time saving and cost saving measure.  A maker of football helmets could easily retool to make helmets for tank crews.  A maker of golfing equipment made knobs for aircraft panels while drop forging tank parts at the same plant.  The same lathes that had turned out baseball bats the year before started turning out massive quantities of mortar shells as the US war machine geared up to full production"

Standard Golf Balls are 1.68 inches in diameter.
