Could this system run AH3?
At what settings?
Is it worthwhile updating the video card, as it may be my only strange point?
My PSU is a Thermaltake 850watt Toughpower. https://www.pcper.com/reviews/Cases-and-Cooling/Thermaltake-Toughpower-850W-Power-Supply-Review
Thanks in advance!

Download it and try it. My CPU is a bit better, but my video is a bit older and I run with pretty much everything maxed out and run 60 FPS steady.
A 1060 video card is under $200 and is a good card that runs the game very well. The new card draw less power so your powersupply is more than enough.
-
The CPU I have is ready to overclock, I've gotten it up to 3.7 on air (4.2 at the max). Considering the price of those chips, I don't mind doing it now and replacing the chip if it cooks within the next year or so.
-
Mines a 3.5 and the video is a 670. The game loads the graphics card more so than the CPU so I think you'd be ok with what you have. Even the video card you have would be ok with just a few things turned down/off.... shadows and environment slider. For all the bells an whistles you most likely could get by with just the graphics card upgrade.
Like I said, download the new version and load it up. Add all the bells and whistles and see where it runs.
-
I'd say yes, since you can overclock your CPU past 3 GHz. That will make the GPU the weakest link. However, knowing that HiTech used a GTX660 for coding your 760 should do relatively fine, 30 to 60 FPS on a 1080p screen.
I used to have a Radeon HD6970 which ranks a quite a lot weaker than neither of those and AH3 ran reasonably well. The PassMark scores for the three are about 3500-4000-5000, yours scoring highest. Environment slider to zero and shadows off, not to mention about the cinematic camera lens glares and such which only look good on video.
-
Until just recently I was running Aces High with minimal graphics on a system with half of that.
-
Seems like it would work fine. Works fine on a $350 computer system plus $112 graphics card for me.

Good Morning Del,
regarding your DXDIAG report you posted above for your system:
DxDiag
--------
------------------
System Information
------------------
Time of this report: 10/29/2017, 18:49:31
Machine name: LIGHTNING
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.150316-1654)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: OEM
System Model: OEM
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.7GHz
Memory: 12288MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 12280MB RAM
Page File: 3607MB used, 20948MB available
Windows Dir: C:\Windows
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
First off, was this report done from a fresh bootup of your PC?
2nd: Your Pagefile used is extremely High for a windows 7 Ult SP1 x64 OS.... you are roughly 2.4 GB to 2.7 GB or more to large here.... you should have around 34 to 52 max processes running go visit www.blackviper.com and check out his Windows 7 OS tweaks page, lot of Correct and excellent info and tips there
3rd: looking at your System Ram, I notice that your pagefile size is 20 GB +, but your System Memory is 12 GB+....... does that system have one of those Triple Channel DIMM setups or are you down a 4 GB stick? this makes me wonder what is exactly going on or what type of system Ram and quantity you are running
4th: I would not overclock it no more than 3.4 GHz to 3.5 GHz... anything more is just overkill to be honest
5th: a decent 1060 6 GB VC would seriously boost your overall performance along with the tweaking and cleaning up that Win 7 Ult OS
hope this helps Del,
TC / Johnny

I have a few repurposed old gaming systems serving as home theater boxes now, and a couple of them are of similar capability to that system Del, and run AH3 fine with some settings adjustment.
+whatever for the 1060.
HardwareCanuks up here recently did a test with the 1080ti and an 8700k new system, and a 2600k 6+ year old CPU/MB with the same 1080ti. The difference in FPS is so minimal that it's almost laughable, in a large percentage of games, resolutions/settings/etc. It's a GPU world, and for $200 as others said, that system with a 1060 would last years still.
-
My PSU can handle a 1060?
-
My PSU can handle a 1060?
Absolutely. That 850 PSU could handle a 1080Ti.
-
My PSU can handle a 1060?
Most definitely
I actually am using 3 PSU S nearly identical to your same model posted.... They can handle a 1080ti
-
LOL
-
No trouble there Del, you could run 1060 SLI, heck probably 3 of them, easily, with that PSU.
IMO if you're planning on sticking with this system for a while, and have $200 to spare, grab a 1060. Check your local/state "buy sell" online resources, I pick off so much hardware up here in sparsely populated Canada, all kinds of HOTAS/Monitors/etc for incredible deals, I'm sure you'll be able to find some similar ones and save a lot of $ on a good used 1060.
Just as an example, here is a like new 1060 here on a site I frequently use, for $155 USD, and that was just 10 seconds of searching, not really digging for a good deal on one, I've seen them as low as $130 USD recently. https://www.kijiji.ca/v-computer-components/city-of-toronto/zotac-geforce-gtx1060-6gb-ddr5-video-card/1309434579
IMO - put a 1060 in that system, you'll be GTG for years in this game, and others.
-
Since I am probably going to stick with this machine for Aces High, or at least I will pass it on to my son to play, is it worth considering getting something better like a 1080? Or is my machine not going to benefit from it in light of the older CPU?
-
Only reason I would upgrade from a 1060 or 1070 to 1080ti or even 1080 would be if you wanted to go VR 3D IE...Oculus rift or HTC Vive
I don't see any other reason to do so...
With that said, your CPU will be fine and enough as long as you OC it to bare minimum of 3.2 GHz
I posted 3.4 GHz just because that is what default is on my Intel i7-2600k 3.4 GHz quad-core CPU
Hope this helps
TC
-
^^Agreed, if typical AAA games and AH3 are going to yours/your sons primary deal, 1060 will do the trick and then some IMO. If $ isn't a big deal, by all means, a 1080 will give you more performance, no doubt, that CPU will drive a 1080 just fine, again IMO.
My experience with both the Vive and Rift when I briefly tried a 1070 was OK, but the 1080s I had were a big improvement in VR, and the 1080ti/Titan are an improvement on the 1080 too in the VR department.
Personally, if VR isn't something you're going to be doing anytime soon, and with a system that is older like the one in the OP, I'd just buy a good used 1060.
-
For me, even a 1050 does fine.
-
I ran AH3 on an MSI laptop that was at the local PC shop, with a 1050ti in it, just to see how it worked (15.6" screen, not the 17.3). I was pretty impressed, and a desktop 1050ti will of course perform even better than a laptop variant.
