so I was poking about looking for AH videos with the most views on YT and came across this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Crg4j4j9VI
some German gamer that has 2million subscribers with near 150k views in 2 months since they uploaded it.
You have to watch it to have a giggle at their noobish responses to experiencing the game for the first time :D but it is painfully clear that it highlights what I feel to be the biggest drawback we face in terms of getting new players from steam who will do exactly what these two have done and then not play again. Vudu has done a good effort in trying to help the first timers with his videos but throw in a language barrier and thats them stumped.
Configuration, take offs, where to find action in Multiplayer, plane loadouts. You see them attempt to read some of the instruction but still maybe after awhile of an audible warning for say GEARS down it might flash up a tip to say raise gears etc. or an arrow pointing to the Gear lights.
I know we cant lead a horse to water or hold them by the hand every step of the way but ALOT of Germans/ Europeans have now seen that video and probably thought they will never play this game thanks to it. How can we grow player numbers off peak if we cant get some sort of German/ insert language instructions? Looking at Lusche!

Just be glad if you can't read all those comments thrashing this "crap looking, totally unrealistic game"...

That would be a lot of work

...not a good sign.....

Didn't help matters the first aircraft he used was the old AH1 shape Ki.67.

Was just about to say this.....I’m not sure why there is still AH1 models still in use.

After game install have an obvious checkbox in German (Deutsch) that maybe allows an NEW 200ish German language help channel. Then publicize this to our current community. You would likely find a good number of German speaking veterans (again looks at Luche  )

Really?!
What kind of a guy checks out a WWII aviation game and the 1st plane he picks up is a KI67?! This is madness!!! :O

We don't know that was the first plane he picked up - but we do know that is the plane he chose to show in the opening segment of his video. There are a number of high quality models with excellent skins to use if you want to show AHIII in it's best light. Unfortunately there are still a number of planes and/or skins available that can give a poor impression of AH also, if that's what your intent is.

That fat lad is the new Reich Marshall :O
Too many Germans playing this game as it is :old:

there is no reason to still have AH1 airplane textures in game at this point.

that is a good point, maybe it was some sort of underhanded sabotage from other games. :noid
Zack just because we have brexit it does not mean we cant play cartoon airplanes nicely with one another. :old:
I guess we need something like, SHOOT RED GUYS, NOT GREEN (if Killshooter detects hits) ! and RAISE YOUR GEARS numbnuts (audible creak longer than >5seconds)! YOU RAN OUT OF FUEL FOOL!! to flash on the screen for new players only during a 2 week trial account. Don't suppose it is feasible to reserve/default vox numbers to certain languages?
-

That would be a lot of work
even if it was one or 2 pages in a text file how to map controls, how to takeoff (spawn in)
general guidance for the Main arena, explaining flashing fields, dar bars, clipboard maps. etc
-
{snip} Don't suppose it is feasible to reserve/default vox numbers to certain languages?
Maybe .... maybe not..... It was simple enough for HTC to add Help channel 6 (pretty sure it wasn't as simple as I make it seem) to text drop down, but it does get a good amount of proper usage.
Suggest to start with English Help drop down vox channel 6 (= 106), then Deutsch vox channel 7 (= 207), also Espanol vox channel 8 (=208). Other channels that might help Francais, Russian, Japanese and Italian.
The Finns seem to already have it covered :aok

it seems to me that if your marketing you game world wide concessions need to be made. Help page should be available in a number of languages. But that's a lot of work, sure it is but it is the price of doing business in other counties.

How about someone authors a basic guide of the game in English. Not overly detailed but a couple of pages and then people like lusche can just google translate it into the other languages the best they can? :D
-
:rofl Just because these guys were speaking German, we all immediately look to Lusche :uhoh to get them straightened out. :D I know that we jest, but down deep this is how we feel. :neener:

Yes, it is all Lusche's fault. He is supposed to keep his countrymen in check. I expect these two youtubers to disapear in the next 24 hours.

I couldn't understand them but guys like this make me laugh with the fun-stration they have...they seem like good eggs....would be a laugh to be around

That reminds me of some incidents in the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang books I read as a child. "Press the button <blinking>" - "PRESS THE BUTTON!!!<furiously blinking>" - "NOW WON'T YOU ALREADY PRESS THIS VERY BUTTON YOU MORON!!!!! <flaming red and beeping>"

If lusche can't get it done because he is censored then maybe put a call into Hilary (if she isn't busy) :aok

I translated a number of comments using Google translate, and it seems many were simply making fun of the incompetence of the pilots (not understanding blackouts, raising landing gear, etc). a few comments on the the dated graphics and lack of good explosions, and challenges to them to fly DCS or other more difficult sims.
They were not serious reviewers giving the game a serious review - more like clowns goofing around for the entertainment value of the resulting video.
-
You nailed it perfectly Bruv119. A bit of explanation would certainly help a lot. A short “how to” for new players; yes.

Well....
If your interested in actually flying a simulated airplane you are going to be a LEEETLE more clued in than these guys who are basically trying to play a video game. Compared to IL2 AH3 is pretty easy to get up and in the air....provided you have a joystick and reading glasses. I'm not sure the problem is lack of instructions as much as lack of interest in the product.
You proud few who fly with the mouse should not really be the example that everybody tries to emulate. <S>

You might very well think that; I could not possibly comment...

How was the bomber moving around the screen like that in the video? Usually the instrument panel is more or less fixed in relation to the monitor`s lower edge.
-
I put together a rough guide, but no idea how to post a 10K file on here. It is just a wordpad text file, so it's not pretty with all the links next to what would be the linked titles in word or something. But no WP. I can email it if someone wants to look it over and fix or change any/everything.

Main issue seems to be the keyboard. On-screen instructions don't make much sense, and also the assignment to keys doesn't make much sense any any but the US keyboard. Examples?
- Shift+= (the +sign): Shift is already needed to reach =, so pressing shift-shift-key (shift-=) doesn't make any sense. Then in parenthesis plus-sign. Keyboards have keys, how to push a sign? German keyboards simply have a + key (no modifier required).
- ESC and ~ to open clip board and chat: Both keys nicely next to each other, but try hitting ~ on german keyboard (AltGr (a different-functioning Alt on the right hand side) plus "+". Normal people have no use for ~ and therefore have no clue it exists or how to push it (few know its the home directory, but anything else?)
- quote-key: doesn't exist. quote and double-quote are hidden behind shift
- Bomb site calibration: UY next to each other, but Y is elsewhere
- Map zoom brackets, also hidden behind AltGr (used for finger-bones breaking key-combinations)
- shift-/ for radio 2, with the little problem that / already requires shift
It's probably not much better on French, Russian, Korean, ... keyboards.
Attracting non-US-keyboard players would probably be easier if specific defaults could be loaded. On the other hand, this would make answering simple questions like "what is the key for..." much harder.

That is not just a foreign issue ccvi. Virtually every laptop has a custom keyboard attached to it. They are also a problem.
It becomes and untenable situation, if game developers have to come up with different mapping for every different keyboard in the world. I am betting within Germany there is more than one keyboard layout available (rhetorical, I found 3 different German keyboard layouts in a quick search).
Not saying it is not an issue, but there does not appear to be a good solution.
Our "Fix Key" option will, at least, address keys which are different and are not recognized.
-
First, they didn't speak or read English very well.
Second, it is obvious they don't know much about airplanes.
Third, trying to play with a mouse. It can be done, but it is not ideal, especially for a new player. Airplanes need joysticks.

Whens the last time you tried to fly with a mouse?

As for the keyboard layout, a printable keyboard chart might solve many issues for foreign players - and laptop users, too. The location is what matters, not what it says on the buttons. Then again, the said keyboard map should be offered annoyingly with the initial install and every patch to make people see it. And they still wouldn't know about it! :old:

I see what you did there :) :aok

None of my laptops of different ages has very different layouts (that's true for laptops with US-international and German layouts). Single individual keys may have been moved slightly to fit the case, but the combination of labels on the keys is still the same as on normal keyboards.

They're basically unchanged since the XT, except for introduction of the EURO symbol and except when microsoft decides for some strange keys to be added or removed. Same frequency of changes as with US keyboards. The one shown in wikipedia doesn't really exist in the wild, also the 3rd layer of characters is to communicate with the rest of Europe, not used in the German language.
Not saying it is not an issue, but there does not appear to be a good solution.

I was completely wrong. My assumption was that the game uses characters codes as input, but when I just tried to switch the keyboard layout it turns out it uses keycodes. i.e., whatever is printend on the key cap has no meaning whatsoever. Bizman has part of a solution:

The other half of the solution could be to internationalize the on-screen instructions. I'm quite sure that windows can be persuaded to deliver information on what character is emitted by a certain key-code. Then instead of displaying "press quote" it could display "press <whatever is printed on the button of the specific computer>". That information could also be used to generate a printable map (displayable - noone uses paper anymore), to avoid manual effort to create it for every new keyboard anywhere on the world (except the part where keys are moved - at least the function would then fit to the key cap label printed).
