Title: For Hitech - A viable suggestion for GV Quadrant Dar and Icons
Post by: Kingpin on November 16, 2017, 08:59:14 PM
I think you might like this idea, because it may all be possible using the current coding.  It mostly involves adjustments to the GV icon ranges and where the GV quadrant ("GV dar") is centered:

Rather than making the quadrant GV dar work in flight out 200 yards, you could accomplish the same thing by simply making the GV icon ranges for "stopped under cover" 200 yards.  In conjunction, I would suggest "stopped in the open" icon range around 1000 yards and "moving" icon range around 3000 yards.  These still require low-pass efforts to find non-moving GVs AND are below effective bombing levels.  So you can't just "one pass" bomb GVs from any alt as we could before the dynamic icon ranges in AHII.  These ranges could perhaps be increased by some amount (50%?) in the Storch.

Then, rather than have the GV quadrant centered and shifting around an aircraft, instead have it centered only on towns (maprooms?) and fields (tower?) perhaps out to something like 3 or 4K (9,000 - 12,000 yards).  This would act more like a "proximity warning system" from the fields, rather than an airborne ground radar system.   If possible, you could even make the quadrant dar only visible from tower, so it acts like "pre-flight intel" instead of like realtime data.

These suggestions are designed to eliminate the bulk of what many players consider "gamey" about both the current icon ranges AND the quadrant GV dar system, in that:

1) The quadrant system no longer acts as an in-flight ground radar, but as intel from a static location, sort of line darbar for aircraft
2) The actual locating of GV's from the air would still need to be done visually and at rather low alts
3) The "hit E, engine off" no longer works as an intant cloaking device, but does reduce likelihood of detection range
4) The stationary GV under cover range (200 yards) is still below  effective dive or level bombing altitudes, so bombing would require a spotting pass and then climbing while maintaining visual to set up a bombing pass -- this is not that easy!.  One

One big benefit of the shortening of GV icon ranges in AHII, was the Lanc-stuka became far less viable.  However, with all the trees in AHIII and GVs moving through them at will, the pendulum has swung far to the other side.  As someone who both tanks and flies, I think there is a good balance with this suggested setup.

Some optional add-on ideas:

The goal of this suggestion is to provide a happy medium for everyone while keeping Aces High closer to a simulated combat experience with fewer "gamey" features.

YOUR RUINING THE GAME!

 :rofl  It's "you're"!

Note: this is an ongoing inside joke between Pemb and myself. Disregard. :)

I've always thought it was strange that gv engine on or off impacts icon visibility from a plane... As if the gv engine running somehow effects the pilot's vision.

It seems like should be gv moving/gv stopped, and engine status should not affect icon range.

Why is it setup like this?

200 yards is too short for the Quadrant Dar Using the Hurricane IID.  :aok

well for the tank to be able to move the engine has to be running. the tank is found because it is moving in and out of the trees planes track gv's by engine sound. the GV icon is still visable even with the tank engine is running or not.
Buckshot
but why are you posting here, you are not a gv'r
you were only in a gv 2 times this tour a wirble once and m8 once- last tour sdkfz251 twice and a wirble 6 times last tour.

I know I know-The Freedom Of Posting Act Of 1998 right-lol.

well buckshot/hellbuck you need to gv more-and I mean real gv'ing.

Thanks for answering the question lunatic....not.

In real life compared to this game : Why would a non moving vehicle with the engine running show a different icon range that a non moving vehicle with the engine off? In real life it would not matter. Not all vehicle smoke when running. Why is it this way in ah? My question applies more to me killing gvs from the air.

If I didn't find gvs so boring I would spend more time in them. I find drive times too long, too hard to aim, to boring to bother practicing aim. Object resupply? I just don't get why someone would spend time doing that or how it is fun.

AFAIk it doesn't. Icon visibilty changes with movement.

Thanks Lusche. Lots in the game say otherwise.

Could be easily tested in a custom arena.

My understanding was that it was engine on vs. engine off (shut down) rather than actual motion, but that is somewhat anecdotal at this point, as I've never tested it.

Either way, the parameters above for the icon ranges and having the quadrant dar fixed to a point (i.e. town and field) were the crux of the suggestion.

In addition to Storch I would like to see taking an anti tank cannon only tankbuster like Ju-87, Hurricane, IL2 without bombs  etc to have some positive effect on being able to see GVs.
