Please increase GV icon visibility range for the the Hurricane Mk IID and the Ju 87G-2. These are dedicated Air to Ground GV attack planes that utilize close in AP cannon attacks to destroy GV's. Both planes are very slow, have short ranges, have a light ammo loads that are quickly expended, must make their attacks close in (500 yards or less), neither carries ordnance, and usually require repeated passes to destroy heavy armored vehicles. Putting an AP shell into the top deck or turret of a tank is incredibly difficult in comparison to dropping a 500 lbs. or 1,000 lbs. bomb on or near their position. Currently icons appear and disappear so frequently (if you find them at all) when maneuvering for a shot that adding an additional 100-200 yard GV icon visibility to these two aircraft will really increase their ability to effectively engage GV's in the current environment.

No, thank you.

IMHO Tank buster should have a further icon view than us run-of-the-mill fighter dudes.

All aircraft should have the GV icons at least doubled.

Hey all,
Okay, a little back ground - commanded a tank co in '87 for a trip to the NTC. Our Bde Cdr arranged a professional development event with the A10 Squadron that was going to support our rotation. During that event, the Sqdn commander told us, "We can't tell who is who. We just shoot vehicles in the area." We asked, "Can't you see which way the gun tubes are pointing?" and, "Do you need help with vehicle ID?" Nope and doesn't matter as you are just a moving dot were the answers. (And, yes, on or about training day 8 of the rotation the A10s 'strafed' my company. Even though when I first saw the 4 birds, I called the ALO on the Bn Cmd net, "THEY BETTER NOT BE MAKING A RUN ON ME!" (This event sooooooo made the AAR.)
"Okay, well if we put you way out in front - can you plink them off for us?" was the next question. The answer was, "Oh yes, easily - if they are moving" (again, this was in the desert). If they are stationary, we will never see them. You should have us focus on moving targets - the advancing Motorized Rifle Bn (MRB) or the Combined Arms Reserve (CAR). Those are the only things we will be able to pick up. In all fairness, they are worried about SAMs and such. The A10s didn't really want to hang around orbiting for very long.
Cobra pilots were the same, if it is stationary or dug in, they would never see the vehicles. I can't count the times Cobras and (in the 90s as an OC) Apache pilots 'killed' friendly vehicles (one was a friggen VULCAN. Oh, the Apachie pilots could see them and I, when watching the gun camera tape, could ID the vehicle - this also sooooooo made the AAR). Unfortunately vehicle ID wasn't high on the training priorities for the Attack Bn. However, if we got the Cobras or Apaches in range of a moving MRB or CAR, they had a field day.
Keep in mind this was way before the Sniper Pod and all the fancy optics / electronics we have today.
I haven't played consistently for a while, but seems to me, that all vehicles should have a grey icon that only shows some information. Maybe the icon just says 'vehicle'. Y'all get to figure out what works best for gaming. If the ground vehicle is moving, then you should have a pretty good range (similar to the old days). If stationary, very short, perhaps even shorter than today. The pilots and ground vehicles get talk to each other to figure out where the cannon rounds and eggs need to go (or where they don't go!).
Of course, there is a balance between playability and realism.
Have fun - see all tomorrow.
Regards,

MWL, I agree with some points here.
The further away an enemy is the less info we should have. I've wished for this before. :old:
Just have it say 'Con' or something when the enemy is far away.
Then the type of con & distance will follow, as we get closer we get to it.

For IL2 too, when having no ordnance.

Very interesting stuff, MWL, thanks for that.

That was the only reason I left it out.

Increased icon distance for tank killers like the hurrD, gun-Stuka, Hs-129
Or
Give tank killers a 'vh quadrant' like we have now but with 8 pie segments instead of 4.
Disclaimer: I don't really gv because i think it's boring. This is to make it more fun for me to kill gvs from a plane.
-
I totally like this idea - I would like it better if friendly fire (bombs, guns, and other vehicles fire) hurt friendly vehicles too. Make it a little more difficult to know which tank in town you need to bomb when we are mixing it up. Also makes a need for smoke rounds to identify targets for aircraft.

hurricane pilots ate lots of carrots so they could see further.

Trying to kill tanks with airplane guns is very challenging. +1 to giving them a vis advantage.
If HTC were to add any more planes is advocate for more tank killers (if there were any effective ones out there)

Always thought icon range should be inversely proportional to ground speed.
If you can fly slow you can see more detail to see a vehicle and should have better chance of ID.
Freindly or enemy.

In a rough way, that's the reason for the Storch.

That would be fun. Bombing tanks with an a20 is simply too easy. Id love to spend more time plinking them with guns!

Yes.
We need to encourage more counter vehicle air strikes to stoke the flames for more low level air combat.
If the GV's are easier to spot then they are easier to mount an attack against them.

This...
But apparently some people would rather hide in the gvs and not fight... I'll die 1000 times but at least I die fighting...

What I do not like at all : the GV can spot plane/type/and exact distance to planes at 6k, and a good Wirbie/Ostwind/M16 can use the exact range for lead.
