Title: Adding a new members only forum
Post by: Traveler on January 21, 2018, 09:44:50 AM
Currently on the Aces High Bulletin board we have a number of forums, all open to the general public to read and post in. This wish would be to add one additional forum that is open to the public to read, but only allow the paying public to post in. It would be nice to discuss issues with actual dues paying members that have a skin in the game and an interest in seeing the game grow.

+1 Would be nice to not have some guys that all they do is come on and bash all the new changes even though they no longer play or the guys who left because of them and complain all the time.

This would add inconvenience with no real benefit.
You don't have to read every post.

One thing it would do is ensure you that every post is coming from a paying customer. What's the inconvenience with that?
Consider the same discussion in two different forums vs in one forum.

Keep in mind there are former players, such as myself, who do not bash the game and do plan on coming back who use the forums to keep our toe in the water so to speak.

How was stating that I understood your reason for not doing this wish a violation of rule #4. I said I understood that you couldn't do it. The technology doesn't exist.

I think you mistook me for an HTC staff member. I am not and have nothing to do with moderation. I was replying to your opening post.
Please reread my post.

And nothing for you would change, you would have access to everything that you currently have access to, just not the members only forum.

What purpose would that serve except to make you feel special?
It is well known many have played on and off for almost 20 years now. Why is their opinion regarding the game suddenly less valid than yours? Just because you're currently paying?

No one said their opinion regarding the game was suddenly less valid and they can continue to express it all they want in all the other forums, just not in the members only forum. Now tell me, what's wrong with the paying customers have just one forum of their own?

Hey, there's an idea, a company making their customers feel special.......... No one said their opinion regarding the game was suddenly less valid and they can continue to express it all they want in all the other forums, just not in the members only forum. Now tell me, what's wrong with the paying customers have just one forum of their own?
I really don't care much one way or the other, but I see no difference in the signal to noise between people with current subs and people without. Like HT said, it's a PITA for... what gain precisely?

because of the PITA of trying to mate the bbs and the AH system which have nothing to do with each other.
I actually like the idea, but it would fall to Skuzzy to (nearly) daily check the forum list and add/remove people to reflect subscriptions. The game and the BBS are apples and oranges and attempting to bridge the software is likely not worth Hitech's time. Besides, he has to work with Skuzzy and if Skuzzy had to babysit a new forum on a daily basis (above and beyond moderation) Hitech would likely find a switchblade in his steering wheel. :devil

Not going to happen, simply because of the PITA of trying to mate the bbs and the AH system which have nothing to do with each other.
HiTech
I did it for a business that had a customer base of about 100 thousand with 1.5 million hitting against there website annually. Created a customer base file with account id and password and when they attempted to sign in to the customer only forum a call to a routine to match against the customer base file kicked off and passed back a 1 or 0 in one bit to show the match or no match. We updated the Customer base file over night each night. It really wan't a big deal or a PITA.

I'm sure you used an integrated CRM that allowed your forums to talk to your "database" and pull such information. For what I can tell (HiTech will sure to be correct if I am wrong), HTC doesn't use such a CRM and for the size of the company, would be cost prohibitive for HTC to switch over to a CRM like SalesForce or RightNow that would allow them to do what you wish for.
Quite frankly, there is little reason to grant your wish. It would be an expensive and time consuming process for HTC to do so without any tangible benefit.

I totally see where Traveller is coming from, he doesn't want to put up with the rantings of the riffraff. However, even riffraff can put up with the 15$ needed to get access to his proposed elite sub forum.
So I don't simply endorse it, but take it to the next level: AH needs a sub forum for gentlefolks of truly nobly birth, accessable only after sending your credentials to HTC.
Here players like Zack (# 57,415 in the line of succession to the British throne), AKAK (tracing his heritage to the Hidalgos of the Reconquista) or me ( a Freiherr von und zu Mützenblag-Freiwipflreuth) could converse freely and uninhibited from the stench and insane ramblings of those awful commoners.
Of course, Traveller himself could not be granted access (he could join Zack's butler in the ante-forum), but I'm convinced that's a sacrifice he is gladly willing to make!
Long Live the Upper Crust!

Would this replace the banhammer in the impeccable breeding forum?

Overly harsh. There's nothing surprising about people who participate in something to resent criticism from people who don't. I understand the motivation for this thread.
OTOH, I agree that it would not be wise, for two reasons. First, we do benefit from the input of people - Lusche comes straight to mind - who may not be participating, but who have significant insight. Second, I suspect it wouldn't be long before most of the paying people ignored the wider thread, while the non-paying people became increasingly hostile because of their isolation. This would result in very bad advertising.
