I have a high bar.  :devil

Launching a red convertible into orbit near Mars and playing Bowie is just cool.

1)  wonder what kind of insurance he has in that car?
2) if allies hijack the car, who dose he report the criminal act to?
3) "IF" that car makes it back on earth......it would be interesting to see the damages it inflected while in space.

The booster rocket's tandem landing was way cool.

It's not in a orbit near Mars.

It's on a Hohmann transfer orbit around the sun, bringing it as close to the sun as Earth and (at times) as far away as Mars. Right now it's still quite close to the Earth.
Or, in other words: "a precessing Earth-Mars elliptical orbit around the sun."

EDIT:

Seems that's somewhat old information, according to Mr Musks last tweet the heliocentric orbit will be larger than that:

The car will be mostly a pile of steel and aluminum within a year or so, the radiation will disintegrate pretty much everything else.
Center booster was lost unfortunately but its not a big deal, the test was a smashing success.

Regarding the new orbit...  From what Elon Musk said at the press conference, I think they fired the transfer stage for max duration just to see how far it would go, longer than would be necessary for a mars flyby.  Apparently the onboard batteries are good for just 12 hrs so once it's on its way, they can't track it anyhow and don't have a way to test another rocket burn for mars capture.  So they just fired it till it quit, to see what max performance looks like for that configuration.

1) Farmers. (We know a thing or two because we’ve seen a thing or two. )
2) If Allies, no one. It's in friendly hands. If ALIENS, report it to Sigourney Weaver.
3) Nothing a little elbow grease and a porter cable random orbital polisher won't buff out.

Yes, how soon we forget!

I am amazed that this Millennium generation of aerospace engineers and scientists could actually have this much success without complaining about too much milk fat in the lattes.

They have an unbelievable amount of computing power available to them, that the engineers and scientists 50 years ago, did not have.  Heck, even 10 years ago.

Makes a big difference.

Consider this;  The F1 rocket motor, used in the first stage of the Saturn V rocket, was first fired in the 1950's.  That was also an unprecedented feat of engineering.

This latest generation of engineers and scientists have a lot to look forward to and I am glad to see them making use of the tools available to make progress at the rapid rate they are.  Kudos to Musk and team.  It was amazing to watch.

well.. Maybe the idea of the weakness of the millennials is mostly created in the heads of older generations and doesnt have that much bearing in reality. Every young generation for the last 1000 years have been the weakest ever according to older generations. Most of my classmates are just barely 20 but the majority are very focused and prepared to fight to reach their goals, even if aerospace engineering is really though.

I have to say "No" to that.  My Wife has a hard time finding millenials who are willing to work.  Most are put off by the fact they are restricted to coming and going at certain times of the day.  They feel they should be able to come in as they please and leave when they want to.

She has some zinger stories about some of them.

Does not mean all are that way.  My generation has its share of lazy people.  The difference is the sense of entitlement many of the millenials express.

I get a similar story from my niece's boyfriend, who is 20, works very hard, has a great work ethic, and ambition, and works in the construction industry.  None of his friends want anything to do with that.

I have two millenial nephews who are both married, have a first child, nice homes, and good jobs. Had a lot to do with their upbringing in Texas. The parents didn't allow them to worship at the alter of entitlement and victim-hood while setting expectations on them for what kind of people they were at all times. Millenials were made, not born.

Is NASA in trouble now?

NASA still coordinates overall larger efforts and orchestrates movement of govt funding to "winning" contracts aimed at achieving national space policy objectives.  They still do some basic research and lately have been working on some aerodynamic and propulsion research that had been neglected for over a decade, but they don't build much.

Oh yea, they're also the repository of public domain knowledge in aerospace areas and are also responsible for helping certify aerospace projects.

Nasa would benefit from it as well, saving a few 100 million dollares when they are going to send stuff to outer space. And spaceX will go nowhere witout NASA, no private Company can afford a Mars trip and spaceX might be good at rockets but they havent the capability to build the payloads.

I'll jump in here and say that I've 'entertained' college interns since 2006 when I became a senior project manager. These interns were mostly Project Manager/Business majors and software developers, that have all been quite challenging to keep them busy. I have found that the best communication with them is not face to face as they sit in my cubicle, but rather instant message on Lync or text on cell phone. Very few did we offer a job when they finished college, and those that did left after a year or so to companies like Google, Amazon, even Tesla.

We've had as many as 2 per summer in my IT group since 1999. One thing I noticed is that those students that came from midwest or east coast colleges tended to perform much better than those from West coast schools. I'll leave that alone for now as it might be percieved as political in nature.

So, I take a couple of my Millennial's to a meeting at the HQ of the biggest name in an industry. They'd be a pretty big client for us. As we start the discussion around a big conference table, the Millennial to my right is looking at his Apple watch every 20 seconds or so. The Millennial to my left is doing it every minute or so.

They were looking at notifications from all of their social media sites, plus every email and text.

I apologized to everyone as I stopped for a second and told them to give me their watches. I threw them into my briefcase on the floor and continued.

The president of their company smiled and we had an instant bond.

We did develop a relationship with the client, and I eventually got rid of them both for even more incredibly stupid behavior.

It's not about age for me, it's about complete self absorption, a lack of common sense and simple courtesy.

See, I don't know a single millennial like that, and I work in Portland and live in Vancouver. Depending on the circumstances, we absolutely will not take a position.

Want me for peak sales hours, but only want to give 5 hour shifts? Sorry, going elsewhere and I'll call you a moron on the way out.

Substandard pay? Not taking the position.

Can't give me a regular schedule so I can work catering on the side? Sucks to be you guys.

Want me closing at 1AM on Friday, and then there at 5AM to bake scones and biscuits for your weekend brunch? You can take those scones, and my pastry cutter, and shove it in sideways.

Not that I'm saying your wife is at fault, but everyone I've talked to who didn't take a position, the impression I've gotten was "wow, that's a really awful place to work", not "quit being lazy".

The reality is that the employees are doing the heavy lifting, and that there are some minimum standards that the business owes to the employees. Most places seem to have forgotten that, and that accounts for 85% of people I know not taking a job.

Well, you asked for it.  Here are some of my favorite quotes.

#1.  No, I did not bring a portfolio.  My Daddy said I would get hired if I showed up.  (looks at watch)  I have a hair appointment, are we done yet?

#2.  What do you mean I have to be here at 9:00am in the morning?  Monday through Friday?  Oh, that will never do.  Good luck finding someone to fill that.

#3.  (constantly checking cell phone) I am sorry, what was the question?  better yet, why don't you just text me the questions and I will get to them when I can?  (She was applying as a receptionist).

#4.  Here are my requirements.  I have to be able to come and go as I please.  Do not expect me to answer to anyone.  I am my own boss.

#5.  I do not think you are qualified to interview me, I should be speaking to the owner.  You cannot possibly understand my needs and requirements. (She was actually that redundant).

I have more.  She gets about one a week.  These are all college graduates.

A few have slipped through the cracks and got a chance to work, but then showed their colors and were terminated.  One of them came in, two days in a row, just after noon just apologizing due to her having so much to do.  Never called in.

Another one just simply refused to do any work because her boyfriend got an infection from a tattoo and she was completely beside herself with anxiety over it.

For the record.  Where my Wife worked is considered one of the premier places to work, in that career field, in this area.  The people there are simply super.  They also are not afraid to share the wealth with the employees.

These are not lazy nor incompetent people.  They are college graduates.  They had to work to get those degrees.  They are disrespectful, rude, and rich in entitlement.

Yes, all generations have their ilk.  These seem to be working hard to make a clear definition for themselves.

As far as the car being space debris goes.  Uh,....at what point is it debris?  Define that.  Can you call the asteroid belt debris?  Or do we reserve the debris tag for man made mass stuck in space?  Why?

There is a lot of useless mass in space.

I.... I'm almost skeptical of that. Absolute worst I've ever seen was some punk out of culinary school who told my exec he should fire me and hire him as the new junior sous chef, and he can run any station twice as well as the others. So I sent him back to the dish pit and he never came back.

But that's just arrogance from being 21 and thinking you're hot toejam. Hell, I never had the crazy streak of drinking and clubbing most kids have, and I was still an arrogant little jerk a few years ago.

But I've never heard of anything so outlandish as that.

I thought this issue I'm about to tell was a urban legend kind of story, but my sister told me about it and this does (used to) happen.

My sister had a young employee, let's call her Millie for her age group.  Millie had a performance review that was less than spectuar. I think she was rated "successful" and not "strong" or "exceptional" and called her VP father who then called her, my sister and proceeded to yell at her that his daughter was 'exceptional'.  While he was yelling at her, Millie was smiling at my sister at the same time.

While the dad VP is the friend of another senior exec where my sister works and felt entitled to call my sister, did a big mistake...she doesn't take crap from anyone

Sister hung up on him mid-sentence...walked over to smiling Millie who suddenly had a look of fear on her face from my sisters expression, asked her to stand up, take her purse and coat, and proceeded to walk her out the doors to the escalator, got her access badge, gave her a taxi chit, and fired her on the spot with a polite "you're done. go home."

Yep. My sister, beautiful woman and scary as fudge when she gets angry. I blew coffee out my nose when she told me that one.

Did you sit through one of my recent interviews for some people I was hiring for my team?

I had an interviewee that fits #1.  Person felt that a resume was not needed as they considered it to be nothing more than a "chain" around their neck that didn't "convey properly" their work history.  Interview lasted less than 5 minutes.

Had a person that tried to pull "I need to make my own hours, I can't work on other people's schedules as it makes me stressed out."  I told them the job has good hours, 10am-7pm M-F, if they don't like it then thank you for coming in for the interview and showed them the door.

Another one was more interested asking if free WiFi was available so they could use their smartphones and tablets.  When I told them that our department is a secured one, meaning that personal smartphones/tablets are not allowed (due to sensitivity of the material we work on) and can only be used in the break/game room or outside of the building, the person walked out of the interview.

We had hired a girl that only lasted a week because out of the week, she missed close to 20 hours of work because traffic was causing her too much stress and demanded that she be allowed to work from home instead.

The boosters landing is also impressive,  unreal what quick deceleration from supersonic re-entry speed and both under control successfully landing; looks more like two missile launch video played in reverse. :lol

Sorry EskimoJoe, I didn't feel it.  They even had the fish-eye backwards..  Seems like they was just showing off their cameras to me.
I still think it's an amazing project though..

While it's a funny meme, Musk and Tesla motors are highly subsidized by dot gov.

For a very good reason. The spaceX journey are quite amazing but they have still "only" build rockets. They will not go anywhere without help from NASA, both financial and with expertise. We are not even close to have the technology to send people to Mars and there is pretty much zero chance that spaceX could pull that off alone. They can build a even bigger rocket but someone will still have to help them with the part with the people on top....
