Title: flaps will not retract after one is destroyed
Post by: toddbobe on February 28, 2018, 09:33:12 PM
Recently I was flying in a B-24 and I had my flaps extended to do a tight turn. I was jumped by a fighter and had one flap shot off. After that I could not retract the remaining one. I was jumped again and was killed. I was transferred to the drone and it flew fine.
This is not plane specific for it has happened in other bombers in the past.

Happens in fighters as well.  Has for ages.  I thought it was by design

I'm not sure this is a bug.  If the flap deployment system (hydraulic or electric?) is a single system that deploys both flaps together, then I could see how damage to one of the flaps might jam the mechanism, preventing operation of the other flap.

In general we have a simplistic visual depiction of control surface damage - the damaged item is removed or made invisible.  In reality parts of the flap would still be there- torn, twisted jagged metal - a twisted or bent out-of-place piece might easily jam a mechanism.

We do have at least one plane with really great visual damage depiction - the P-39.   When rudder, ailerons, of elevators are damaged the piece is replaced with a damaged version, showing the twisted metal and underlying structure.  Really cool looking.  I don't think I've received flap damage in the '39 though, so I don't know how that is depicted.

Depends on the type of damage to the flap(s), I am thinking

From what I have seen, if the flaps are down, and it gets shot off, even though the flap is gone, it's still effecting the flight model as if it were there and down. This is counter to what "should" happen, and I agree this is a bug.

Perhaps there could be two modes, damaged (jammed in last position), and gone (won't deploy).  It seems the coding has chosen the former regardless of level of damage.

I think that is where the confusion issues from. There are two types of flap damage (flap shot off, and flap stuck), but there is only one "visual" for damage (missing flap).

Maybe another visual clue for the "stuck" version.

I've been always under the impression there's only one type of damage possible depending on the state of the flap when it's hit.

If the flap is in any position other than all the way up, it gets stuck.  If it's all the way up, then it's shot off.  But as you say the flap is shown as shot off no matter what kind of damage occurred.

The whole problem with this is that if the flaps are up when damaged and you go to use flaps on landing, the flap that is still there will go up and down fine. The programmers have made it (unrealistically) so that if the flaps are down when one is damaged they stay in position. To make it consistant, either the flaps shouldn't work at all or the one good flap should be able to move.

They do. The undamaged one still moves if you have a damaged flap.
