Title: DH Tsetse (Mosquito)
Post by: Odee on March 07, 2018, 05:30:35 PM
I would like to see the TSETSE the DH Mosquito Mk XVIII in game. It had a 6 pounder in the chin that replaced the 20mm cannons, and was used for anti-shipping mostly. See video below.

While the MkXVIII would be fun I'd rather have the MkXXX,think of a Mossie 16 but armed with 4 20mm cannon!

The 18 is just a converted Mk6 and the 30 is an armed 16........ :D
The weights would need adjustments and some tweaking of the FM but as you said why not since we have the basis of both already ingame.
:salute
The mk30 is not an armed B.XBI. It was derived from the line of the night fighters, while the bombers were a different development branch. It is actually closer to the FB.VI. than to the bomber. Just nit picking.
The XVIII tse tse can bring something more unique to the game with its 57mm Mollins and armor platings. The NF.30 will extend the mosquitoes envelop as fighters to well above 15k where our VI looses its oomph pretty much. It will be superior to the VI starting at about 7k. On the deck the VI will hold a small advantage.

Oh, and just to be clear about the mollins gun - this is not just some large bore light cannon. This is a proper anti tank weapon that was used on the ground in N Africa, and while by 1943 it had problems penetrating the front armor of main tanks, it could still hurt them bad from any other angle. It fired 6 lbs, high velocity, AP shells at the rate of just about 1 per second. This would easily be the most powerful aerial cannon in the game. And with that muzzle velocity it can even be effective air to air (2 recorded kills that I know of).
Yes please  :x

The Brits developed an APDS round for the 6-pounder, available from March, 1944, that had some remarkable ballistics and kept the gun useful long after it otherwise would have been useless. Don't know if the aerial version utilized these rounds, though.

I realize it's not an armed bomber,I was referring to the same engines,it's obvious the bombers are different from the night fighters/fighter bombers.
I guess I should have been more specific I was only considering the ingame planes and how theMk30 would preform similar to the 16.

PS: I have a family connection to the Canadian built Mossies,my uncle worked for DH during the war.

The APDS round was never used in the Tseste, presumably because the sabots might fly back and damage the airframe. There was a squeeze bore round and barrel developed for the 40 mm anti tank gun though. The barrel tapered from 40 mm down to 30 mm and a special round developed that would reduce in diameter as it passed through. The idea was pretty much the same as the sabot, a large diameter to pick up energy from the charge and a small diameter once it left the gun for better muzzle velocity and low drag. It worked pretty well but was not adapted, partly because the barrels wore out very quickly and also because cannon-firing anti-tank aircraft were by then considered by the RAF to be too vulnerable to AA fire.
In AH the Tsetse would be a nightmare for GVers, but A2A you'd do better with a Mk VI as its a fair bit lighter and if you can't take out any plane with four nose mounted Hispanos you probably won't with the 57 mm either.
