My Train Of Thought Goes Like This>>>
Since AH3 Is FTP On Steam. I Could Use It As Training. It Took A Lot More Than 2 Weeks To Set Everything Up And Feel Comfortable With Fighter Ace. After I Was Comfortable I Would Go With A Hi-Tech Subscription. Is This Sound Thinking?

AH3 is free to play from HTC also. There are a number of free arenas as well as the ability to create 16 player custom arenas yourself. You also get the "2 weeks" free in the Melee arena IF you dont have a prior account and used that 2 weeks up already.
So either way would work. If you want all the extras you get using Steam, go that way, if you just want AH, go that way.
Welcome aboard!

There is no difference between Steam- and Non-Steam AH. Same arenas, same features, same free areas.
-
You can also play the game offline if you download it directly from the AH website. Take off from the field you spawn in at and you can chase the AI fighters circling around the field

Since Aces High is built on a real flight simulator, the learning curve is pretty steep. So we strongly recommend to new players that they don't subscribe right away. Spend some time in the Offline Practice Arena learning how to fly your airplane. After you are comfortable with how the game works, then subscribe and start your free two weeks.
-
I'm not sure you can transfer your settings over from steam to AH..if not it would be a bit of a pain to re set it all up..someone will know..its free on both for 2 weeks anyway.
Not sure what you gain.

Training is available and is likely your best bet for improvement.

Welcome to AHIII. Don't get frustrated, free to ask questions, and as always, Alt F4
-
no don't ever hit alt-f4-it just ask's if you want to leave the game

True, but there's a check box to get rid of that annoying question.
-
I remember when there was not check box option just instant drop to desktop. I don't know how many players were lost due to that. Ask any question on range and if you were a noob you got alt-f4 as the answer. :devil I know it got me once. :)

HiTech

I think he meant we as in current players?

IMHO, the best way for new players to learn the game is to jump into the main arena and interact with everyone. Sure you die allot but that is how you get better. The Training Arena is also available for more detailed instruction.
Many players join a squad right away and learn by participating. Allot is explained on the way. The learning curve is steep but there is allot going on any given night and the new player will find a niche pretty quick. If you do not join a squad there are allot of players that will take the time to answer questions. There is also a help section on the AH main web page with lots of detailed instructions that any new player will find helpful. It is very organized so that it does not take long to find the topic or question that one is looking for, ie. Joystick set up.

HiTech
I need to clarify. I, Mongoose, think this way. I know there are others who think the same, so I used "We".
(Don't ask who these others are. No one in their right mind would admit to thinking the same way I do. :) )
I do not speak for or represent HTC. I am just a rabid fan who wishes more people could enjoy this game as much as I do. I apologize if anything I wrote led to any misunderstanding.
My thought process goes like this:
New player subscribes to game.
New player runs smack into the steep learning curve.
New player quits and leaves, never to be seen again.
I, Mongoose, speaking solely as a rabid fan of the game, suggest a different approach:
New player downloads and installs the game.
New player spends some time in the Offline Practice arena.
New player learns about the game interface, and how to fly the airplane.
New player subscribes, stays, and spends years playing Aces High and paying HTC for all the hard work that Hitech and crew put into this wonderful game.
I hope this clarifies my position and my intent. Again, I apologize for any misunderstanding. :salute

Jump in, no better way to get better than going straight to the sharks.

You need interaction with other players to find answers to the things you do not understand. The whole secret is making new players feel welcome.

Fly, die, learn, try.
If it was easy it wouldn't be worth playing.
That getting to any level of competence takes time and effort makes it more fun in my opinion.
I'm way past taking it personally or over thinking falling numbers. It's not my problem. I'll just continue to wear a monthly bill and roll with it. I've made some good friends on line and had more than a few good times.
Smile and dive in.

Jump in, no better way to get better than going straight to the sharks.
Maybe for some, but I've seen a few newbies barely get off the runway only to get wacked by the sharks, never to be seen again.
If newbies had an identifying icon, the sharks might give them a break. I know I would. Maybe the "newbie" identifier would disappear after they got a few kills, so returning sharks wouldn't get too many breaks. :D

Have a NEWbie option ride available only in the Melee arena. While your account is a two week account you have a toggle option to fly a newbie ride.
1. - A P51D with no ammo and no ords, 100% fuel max, in bright yellow or orange. ENY will not effect it.
2. - While in that ride mode only have use of range text but, he hears VOX.
3. - While in that ride mode his friendly Icon is Yellow with the word NEW in place of his ID. Enemy sees in red NEW, while everyone knows it's a P51D with no guns.
4. - The NEWbie mode plane cannot be shot down but, the pilot will hear every single round hitting him. If he collides or hits a solid object, or the ground, he is towered.
He can follow everyone around to watch how to fight in our game, other wise a meaningless distraction. He can make attack runs or try to saddle up just to do it, and if the enemy wants to waste ammo, show him just how new he really is. The only problem would be collisions unless Hitech would remove even that along with no ammo and ords in NEW mode. Newbies would not need to get a ride along just to watch how we go about playing with each other, and getting vulched on the runway is no longer and issue.

Man..we all jumped in when we felt ready.(I personally spent a bit of time in the training arena to get my head round the fundamentals before I got stuck into the mental fun of the MA.) But when we got in thr MA We got our arses handed to us repeatedly..gave us the incentive to get a kill..
Up and atom again and again until that glorious first kill..
More incentive to upandatom again to get your name in lights..probably a long time coming but ultimate victory when it happened..all that seal clubbing you endured worth it now..name in lights...you had arrived!!
What I'm saying is, we all pushed through and stuck around..why do think these new newbies won't ..if they love the game they will stay.
One of the things that impressed me about the game was the level playing field..only diference was skill..and if you worked at that you stood a chance of climbing the ladder..its a feature I really liked when I started.
Hope we do get more folks checking it out..the right stock that want to stick about.
<<S>> to the newbies

According to HTC most of those who leave do so within 20 minutes. I've seen several do just that. Maybe the <cough> younger generation needs a bit more hand-holding. :old:
