Here are some screen shots of what has me stymied. What is it that causes the metal to flare up when shadows are ENABLED? I am able to get the effect I want with shadows DISABLED but when I turn them on the thing washes out in a way I do not intend and looks terrible (to me). What am I doing wrong?
I don't want it to look bad in either mode because there are probably a lot of players (like myself) who disable shadows. OTOH, if I optimize it for that then it looks bad when shadows are enabled.
I'm beating my head against the wall trying to figure out what I need to tweak to get it right.

Tone down the spec highlight a bit. Find a comfortable middle ground between the two settings.
you could also find the median value between shaded and unshaded, then, find a common ground value between the two.

True. Is it prudent, OTOH, to make the shadowed version look right and just let the other suffer? I would think over time people will trend toward shadows as graphics cards get upgraded, etc.

You might find that the middle ground looks good for both.

True. :salute

I’ve continued to dial back the brightness on the S map and it still looks the same...
Something else is in play here... :headscratch:

Solved?
I lightened the E map. That made a difference.
