The TBM was manufactured by General Motor's. The TBF was manufactured by Grumman. As I understand they were the same plane except for who made it. Grumman was the first one to make them and GM was given license to make them to increase numbers. Why did HTC go with TBM instead of TBF. Just wondering. :headscratch:

Grumman was producing more F6Fs so they gave production to GM. TBF and TBM also have some small differences including differing engines and wing hard-points. As for why I have no idea, we should have both.

Grumman built TBF-1 series Avengers and General motors their identical TBM-1 series aircraft, both of which had a 1,700 hp engine. The HTC Avenger however is a TBM-3 which had a 1,900 hp engine and rocket rails. By the time the TBM-3 was ready for production the Grumman factory had stopped making Avengers so there were no TBF-3s produced.

As far as I recall the TBF and TBM had the same Wright R2600 14 cylinder twin row radial engine. Rated between 1700 and 1900 horse power. The same basic engine that powered the FW190 A, f and G models to. BMW had a license to build Them. The TBM also Has an extra .50 cal forward firing.
