Title: Player-controllable V1
Post by: oboe on April 08, 2018, 06:45:13 PM
I think it'd be cool to have a player-controllable V1 buzz bomb in the game.  The real V1 was a pulse-jet powered guided-missile with a 1,870 lb warhead and a range of about 150 miles.  Its top speed was around 400 mph between 2,000-3,000 ft.

From Wikipedia:

Quote
The V-1 was the first of the so-called "Vengeance weapons" (V-weapons or Vergeltungswaffen) series designed for terror bombing of London. It was developed at Peenemünde Army Research Center in 1939 by the Nazi German Luftwaffe during the Second World War. During initial development it was known by the codename "Cherry Stone". Because of its limited range, the thousands of V-1 missiles launched into England were fired from launch facilities along the French (Pas-de-Calais) and Dutch coasts. The first V-1 was launched at London on 13 June 1944,[6] one week after (and prompted by) the successful Allied landings in Europe. At peak, more than one hundred V-1s a day were fired at south-east England, 9,521 in total, decreasing in number as sites were overrun until October 1944, when the last V-1 site in range of Britain was overrun by Allied forces. After this, the V-1s were directed at the port of Antwerp and other targets in Belgium, with 2,448 V-1s being launched. The attacks stopped only a month before the war in Europe ended, when the last launch site in the Low Countries was overrun on 29 March 1945.

In our MA with 2x fuel burn multiplier, the range would be around 3 sectors.   Perhaps it could be coded with no cockpit and only external view enabled, or fixed external camera view as shown in the bottom left image (these shots are from FS2004).

The range of control-surface movement could be set to maybe 10-15% of a typical in-game aircraft's, and the throttle hard-wired to full, so the V1 would not be able to do much maneuvering, and it would take some skill and practice to be able to hit a target, but very unlikely to be able to hit a small target like a single building.    Make the power curve so the engine loses almost all power above 3,000ft, so the player is limited to low-altitude.   Could make it lightly perked (bomber perks) so they'd be a rare sight in the arena.

Could be another interesting thing to do in the game, both controlling one and finding/destroying them in flight.  They are small but they would still have an icon associated with them, so not impossible to find.  I've always like the paintings that show the RAF dealing with those "Doodlebugs":

Neither the V-1 nor the V-2 were controlled.  They were just launched and sent on their way.  The idea was that the V-1 would fly a certain distance in a straight line and then hit the ground and explode.  There was no steering once they were launched.

This has been wished before, and turned down.  It simply doesn't fit the rest of the game.  I think it would be an interesting idea as part of a scenario, but I can't see it as a good fit for a regular arena.

I think it would come down to how they would be launched (or who could launch them)
Already got too many people crying over taking control of a CV, I'd be scared to see how this would be handled.
I do like the idea though.

The idea is not without merit but i'm not sure how we could "tilt" them with the current collision model. We could still shoot them though. As far as aiming...I dunno. Needs some more thought. Not sure they would ever be "flyable" by a player even in the limited sense. V-1s are cool I give you that.

It could be a perked bomb/vehicle that you could launch. It would have a range of say....500 miles? Pick a target at a cost of 250 vehicle perks and fire away!

Three times as much as the real thing, which would also amount to 'unlimited' on our 250x250 miles maps? Which, in reality,  could barely hit a target  the size of a sector at 'long' range?

Player-controlled, I agree.  But it would be interesting to have a few V1 drones passing through the sky now and again, like barges and convoys and trains.  Gives you a difficult aerial target to engage.

I could see trying to jump one in an La or Dora.   Speeeed... (not counting a 262 cause I'm cheap)
