Thinking on upgrading my old game computer which is primarily used for AH. I do get some micro delays etc. But overall quality is good. Looking either getting a GTX 1080 or a good 144mhz monitor, 28 inches or larger. Thoughts?
My current system is;
AMD 8370 8 core
Gigabyte MB
16GB Ram 1600 DDR3
120GB SSD
GTX 970
Vizio 32 inch TV (1080p)
750 w PSU
Win 10 64b

Monitor at this stage. You won't see much difference with a GTX 1080 on a regular 1080p 60 Hz monitor anyway.
If you're going bigger than 27", I'd also recommend a little tighter resolution. 1440p @ 144Hz might make the 970 struggle a little but the image quality will be a lot crisper on 30" and larger. When the prices go down after the crypto-craze has lost the hype, a 1080 or whatever the equivalent will be at that time will allow you to crank the settings back up.

The 970 should not struggle much at all with 2560x1440 resolution. My old AMD 7950, at home, handles 2650x1440 pretty well and it is a far lesser performer than the 970.
32" is a good size for 2560x1440 resolution. Nets about a 10% increase in PPI (pixels/inch) over a 27" 1920x1080 monitor.

Thanks! I will start looking into a good monitor.

Until recently the pickings for a 32" 144hz monitor were pretty slim 24", 27" especially and a few larger 100hz 34" were around, I've tried most of them out and kept 3 of them, and one 4k 28" Acer Gsync. IMO the larger 1440p 34" which are only 100hz, are great, while the difference over 60hz the eye can easily see despite what some say, after 100 or so, from say 100 to 165, the effect of that difference isn't quite as noticeable, although it IS there.
Asus has the 32" XG32VQ out now, a 1440p 144hz unit, if $ isn't an option, it's a great way to go.
I ordered my 27" 4k 144hz unit, $2000 USD pre order (ouch), but the stats on the Asus and Acer models are great, and the early reviews are too, plus I've been waiting closing in on 2 years now for one of these, as they've been delayed over and over, and I'm not letting a ridiculous entry price stop me now.
I still maintain that of all the "gamer" options for an LCD out there, Gsync, size, HDR now, resolution, etc, that hz, anything over 100hz, is by far and away the most critical and experience improving feature. So find yourself a good LCD that can do 100 to 165 ( or higher now if you choose, there are 200hz units out), that fits your budget, and don't worry about "buyers remorse". You won't have any when you see the difference over a 60hz unit.
Skuzzy is right though, 1440p and particularly 4k really benefit from a larger size than 27". That's not to say that a 27" won't provide a huge improvement and great experience, it's just due to the nature of how the eyes see and perceive those little pixels and dots, that for higher res monitors the larger screen size translates to a much better effect. I'm waiting for the new 65" nVidia super LCDs, the big format gaming displays, 120hz, Gsync, 4k, HDR, huge nits...the wife ack is going to be like a raid to Ploesti, if the new 27" are 2$k USD, these suckers have got to be cracking the $4k range...but it'll be so worth it for non VR games.

I would've gone with the 1080 and let the 1070 pick up the slack.
Monitors can be gotten for cheap.

What's the slack picking 1070 you're talking about?

For older games that use PhysX homey.

Ahh, OK, so you weren't referring to the OP.

I ended up getting a 27inch Samsung CFG73 series. Haven't got to use it much yet. So far though it's an improvement over my 32 inch TV.

Update. Got the Samsung CFG73 series 27 inch monitor. Works great. No micro delays, tearing, jaggy's. Colors are better. Smooth with 144mhz. Frames rates over 60. And this is with graphic settings maxed out.
Thanks Skuzzy. Your advice was spot on!

alskahawk, I recommend you adjust your settings to give you a solid 144 FPS or at least keep yourself at the three digit level all the time.
-
My frame rate is in excess of 100. Usually around 120.
-
Frame rates higher than 60 require disabling V synch, no? My understanding is that causes rubber bullets and other issues.

I think hitech busted that myth, but if not then you can still go over 60fps with a 70, 85, 90, 120, or 144Hz monitor.

Max, that's true if your monitor does 60Hz. On a 144 Hz monitor the cap is 144 fps.
Why is that and what do those numbers mean?
The Hz value tells how many times per second the monitor refreshes the image. It's a stable pulse, independent of the video card, and applies for still images as well. V-sync synchronizes the video card with the monitor, limiting the fps to what the monitor can do. If your video card is weak, the same image gets refreshed more than once resulting poor fps. Disabling V-sync and using a powerful video card will cause tearing in moving images since the state of refreshing is different in various parts of the screen. See, the refreshing doesn't flash the entire screen simultaneously, it starts at one point or row and continues until the entire screen has been refreshed. V-sync forces each image to be finished before it allows the next refreshing. And this happens 60 or 144 or even 240 times each second, depending on the monitor!

I get higher FR than 60 and I haven't disabled anything with the new monitor.

They CFG73 monitor has a native refresh rate of 144hz, so you could get a frame rate of up to 144 without disabling vsync.
