I'd like to do some shameless self promotion and give congrats to Death From Above on our 20th anniversary. DFA was originally comprised of ex members from the Riders of the Apocalypse squad (ROA) in Air Warrior. Nobody seems to know for sure the exact date when DFA was formed, but the consensus from the "old timers" in the squad is early in June, 1998. So June 6th with it's historical significance seemed like a good date.
I joined DFA in 1999 (fuzzy memory here - thanks scotch) and have been the CO (on and off) since. During all these years the squad has been fully active in Air Warrior and then in Aces High.
I'd like to thank all the great folks I have met in DFA over the years, our friends and foes in the virtual skies, and the creators of both Air Warrior and Aces High for providing the playground that has given us so many years of entertainment.
Here's hoping for 20 more years. :salute

Congrats everyone! :salute :airplane:

I’ve been part of DFA off and on since Airwarrior. Great bunch of guys. Had the pleasure of meeting a few in person. The game is as good as the people playing, along with what Hitech and his crew have been able to accomplish for a small company.
Thanks for all the good and drunk times TITAN

Congratulations!
DFA has a mighty and proud history! :rock

The best way for DFA to celebrate is to join us in the "Fjord Fury" scenario on Saturday. :aok
Scenarios were invented by Dok in Air Warrior in 1992. I suspect the old Air Warrior DFA guys flew in it.
So, for the sake of history -- time for DFA to be in a scenario!

 1991 :uhoh Dang,2 years out of High School. INTERNET? Heck TVA didnt get online till 93,94. Dad was Nuclear side....I got to play around with his Internet one night, when they doing an outage. :aok NEVER knew :salute AND NO, I didnt break anything :rofl

By the way, it is possible DFA was around before 1991.
I have a gap in Air Warrior scores from Feb 1989 to Dec of 1991, so I can't check those periods.

What sort of NETWORK was this,I should have known about it...? Sort of glad I didnt though...I would have been worlds worst husband and Father :devil 20yo kids still in diapers bad :uhoh IF I could afford them that is :rofl Now that I think about it...None of that would have happened! Would have never been married :rofl WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS :furious Heck I was ELATED to get a hold of ACE COMBAT for PlayStation 1...in 96-97 ish :uhoh Before that was only Microsoft F-15 Strike Eagle on a Commodore 64 :old: Kind of feel cheated a bit :headscratch:

Back in late 1980's and early 1990's, there were Air Warrior folks who spent many hours per day and $750/month on Air Warrior (which is $1400 in 2018 dollars).
When I first came across Air Warrior in 1987, I flew a few times and then stayed completely away from it, as otherwise I feared that I would spend enough time on it to be ruined.
I returned to it years later when I figured out how I could manage it.
It was glorious.
People these days don't know how good they have it and don't even care. :old:

congrats on your squadron anniversary. :aok

Oh my what a flashback... Airwarrior Play it FREE on AOL. Having to upgrade my modem from 33.6 to and brand new v.90 for the blazing fast speed of 56k. Flying with the Rebel Rousers. How far we have come. :old:

YES! That was why I am TORN. POed I didnt know about it...but GREATFULL I didnt :uhoh In my area of Chattanooga,Tn., we didnt even have dial-up internet till around Windows98. Even then though, never heard of an ON-LINE PvP flight sim :( It was CombatFlightSimulator 1,2 and3 with some Jane's F-15. So again, pretty ok with not knowing about this, then. :O Wish I still had my Force Feedback joystick that I used with those games :rock Thanks to YOU GUYS who suffered through The Dark Ages, as those trials led to this MOST GLORIOUS of days for a Flight Sim lover :rock

Congrats DFA
Great achievement
Here's to 20 more years

Yep, not much Internet in those 1987-1991 days (mainly academic only). Air Warrior was running on an online service called "GEnie", which you accessed via dial-in modem.
At first, it was $6/hour non-prime time.
Ah, those were the days . . . :aok

I've flown in some of the scenarios and you do a great job Brooke! I might be able to swing this Sat - you still got a K4 open?
-
Absolutely. Would love for you to fly a k4. :aok

By the way, it is possible DFA was around before 1991.
I have not been a member of DFA since the beginning, only the last few years, but I recall a DFA Squadron in my GEnie days and on AOL & GameStorm. Unfortunately the original founding members are more noted for their adult beverage consumption than record-keeping.

Brooke I came across AW/Mac around '96 On AOL-Gamestorm. Events are somewhat fuzzy but I recall some "back door" that kept the cost down to very little, if anything at all. (I do remember the Genie stories of woe :devil) Anyway, I remember printing out a hundred + pages from the AWTA or whatever it was called...the training manual that you were chiefly responsible for. So I guess I have you to partially blame for wasting thousands and thousands of hours over the years. :airplane:

Congrats to the DFA. :salute
Brooke and others have mentioned some of the records from that early AW era and it took me a while to remember that I'd compiled a lot of that stuff on our old Musketeers' site, which is no more. The cobwebs cleared in my ole noggin' and I found copies of them on my local machine, in PDF format. I've placed those files in a Google Drive Folder, simply called AW History (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1fMVR2Cl5wmuEXYVfjOn3E-7EwAdDGn4D?usp=sharing).
Submitted for your reading pleasure: print-outs of the old Crash & Burn forum, our Musketeers' Bloody Blade forum, and many early campaign scores, as well as a couple of other files. If what you read stirs up old memories or rekindles angry old rivalries, rest assured, it's just my intent to save some of that shared history for posterity's sake. Hope some of you enjoy the trip down memory lane. :old: :airplane:
