With having a Nvidia 1080 card, is it better to use hdmi connection or the vga for aces high?

Depends on the monitor.  It does not matter to Aces High III.

Normally the HDMI/DVI connection yields the best visual results due to the higher resolution of the monitor which was not supported well (if at all) by the VGA definition.

HDMI will carry sound as well as video. (if you need that).
Other than that, DVI & HDMI connections are pretty much the same.

The really big difference is VGA is analog, while DVI/HDMI are digital.
