Title: WiP P-51B Bald Eagle III
Post by: oboe on June 18, 2018, 12:23:36 AM
Working late on this P-51B skin restoration today.  When I looked up from my workbench it was dark outside and the tower clock said 4 am.   After cleaning up and putting my tools away I sat for a while, just looking at her and how she sits in the hangar.  She's coming along.  This image is a bit dark, with only the hangar's ceiling and stand lights for illumination --  I thought it might be interesting to see how bare aluminum looks under AH's artificial interior lighting only - it really was 4am game time, and pitch black outside.

Honestly I wish this was the default hangar view angle and distance.  I like being up close to the plane a lot more.

Great looking skin Oboe.

I agree it would be a nice feature to have a "view skins" button in the hangar that switched to a viewpoint like that, without the need to see all the ord etc. The problem I guess would be getting a POV that suited both something as big as the B-29 and as small as the Jeep. Likely there would need to be the option to move around, several viewpoints to choose from, or different default viewpoints for bombers, fighters and GVs.

Thanks guys.  I thought it was interesting to see how the spec and power values for bare metal react under much more subdued lighting conditions than the outdoor AH III sun.  This plane is being illuminated only by the relatively weak hangar ceiling lights and 2 banks of free standing shop work lights, one right and one left.

I'd like it if the hangar had an external view that worked the way aircrafts do - you can move around the aircraft, up, down, zoom in and out, but always pointed at the aircraft.  I do that on the runway all the time.  I'm in Gods eye view here, but of course going around to the other side doesn't show much as its pretty dark over there.  Might be a cool feature to be able to click and drag the aircraft through a 360 degree spin with the mouse - then we could see a lot more nose art, which is most often on the left sides of the aircraft.   Zoom feature in here is only two position in and out - I can't scale it like I do with external runway view.

For me at least there is something more immersive about being up close to the the aircraft.  I actually have a tiny urge to place an oil drip pan under the lower rear engine cover panels as I look at the plane sitting there.

Hitech should hold a bare aluminum contest with you guys. I bet choosing a winner would be very hard with all of your collective growth in doing bare aluminum.

Well I think she's pretty much finished.  I can see a couple of adustments/fixes I need to make yet, but you get the idea.  Thanks to everyone who chipped in ideas and observations in the research thread.

Thank you bustr. Along that line, when I'm fortunate and find a suitable portrait of the pilot, I colorize his face and graft it onto the AH dummy pilot.

Here's how Lt Robert Eckfeldt came out.  Can't do much about the dummy pilot's bone structure or facial geometry, but there is at least a little resemblance:
