Title: Fuchida's Kate
Post by: Greebo on June 18, 2018, 02:34:55 PM
Thanks to Lyric1 for finding the info for this skin.

This B5N2 Kate carried Lt. Commander Mitsuo Fuchida, who led the Japanese aerial attack on Pearl Harbour. He also led the IJNAF's raids on Darwin and into the Indian Ocean. During the voyage to Midway he contracted appendicitis and so was not fit enough to lead the air group during the battle. When his carrier Akagi was hit by US bombs he was forced to exit the bridge using a rope and broke both ankles when an explosion broke his grip. After surviving Midway he served as a staff officer until the end of the war.

Fuchida's Kate was an early example of the B5N2 finished in natural metal with a black nose and red tail surfaces. Shortly before Pearl Harbour it had its upper surfaces painted in green, although the red tail was retained to help with identification. By the time of the Indian Ocean raid this hastily-applied green paint had chipped off quite badly. Other NMF Kates had their lower outer wings painted, probably in olive grey. This was done in order to prevent reflections from NMF folded wings giving the carrier position away, so I have copied this practice here.

Wow!

By any chance do you do historic illustration work as part of your livelihood?

No, this is just a hobby for me. Trying to dissect details from B&W photos is part of what makes it interesting, particularly when you find something no one else has seen.
