Title: I wish i wish for Brooks water vapor in the sky
Post by: TWCAxew on June 22, 2018, 08:02:25 AM
I wish we could have Brooks settings for clouds in MA. They look realistic and my whole squad in the scenario loved them :rock

Did you gents have any large furballs or air to air actions in or around those clouds? When I created the weather systems for the MA terrains I had to reject that cloud formation type from the menu becasue it impacted FPS when entered and in the center dropped FPS into the low teens to single digit. Is the cirrus layer below 30k? For the MA Hitech requires it set above general game play levels so I set them about 35K. Cirrus layers are very dramatic flying just below them looking long to the horizon while that heavy layer is below you.

How many players on average were clustered together at any place during the run of the scenario? And did any combat with numbers take place in that type of high density cloud formation? I still have to build weather for my new terrain which will require a testing period before shipping it with the project. In the MA players make regular use of hiding in clouds to attack or run away. I did a lot of testing before settling on the cloud types I used in the MA. So far unless Hitech has been receiving PM complaints for a year or so since I created all the weather for the MA. My cloud choices based on FPS were the right ones to not impact game play.

Howdy, Bustr.

Many.

When I created the weather systems . . .  it impacted FPS when entered and in the center dropped FPS into the low teens to single digit.

I'm not seeing anyone in scenarios these days mentioning any frame-rate hits.  Not sure if there wouldn't be any for a larger player base, but I've run on low-cost systems with Pentium g4400 cpu and nVidia GTX 1050 ($140 card), and I get 60 fps in or out of clouds with environment slider set to "none", including in Fjord Fury.

It is at 30k.  But it is very easy to change that, of course.

I estimate a max of 40 or so players in one place.

We had some concentrated fights in and among the clouds.  See the video posted above for a view of some of the action.

I like to add that there was 1 huge fight with 10 guys going on in 1 singel cloud. Also there where 12 sets of lancs flying in the distance who where also being attacked by a large group of germans. I heard no one complaining about lag.

Since I built the weather files for the MA I've not heard in say the last 6 months complaints about FPS in the cumulus formations I used. Still, I did extensive testing against my graphics card to use the least FPS impacting cloud formations. The clouds over the center of my terrain Oceania were the primary test, I had FPS in single digits when I started the test thinking the heavy formations looked very realistic with a 7k base like real life. Since it was an MA terrain I had to think in terms of very large concentrated groups of players and a broad spectrum of graphic cards. I did not want to impact Hitech's customers and get my work pulled for accidentally punishing his paying customers with my dreams of what looked good versus what would work 24x7 for his customers.

I still have to build a weather file for my new project, I may have missed some mention by Hitech that he has continued to tweak the cloud objects. So I will run heavy cumulus testing again to see if with a 7,000ft base they don't kill FPS like with my earlier testing while I fly through them. Not all players have GTX 1000 family series video cards or equivalent and I have to be cognizant of that in a 24x7 environment.

I would like to use those cloud formations on my current project since it's themed from East African topography. I'm hoping your scenario's use of them are sign of good things.

I didn't notice any frame-rate hits in Fjord Fury, in clouds with various planes around.  I wouldn't see impact if it went from 80 fps to 60, though, as I've got mine capped at 60 fps.  Also, I use environment map slider set to "none".  I didn't hear even one comment, though, on frame-rate hit from any scenario player.

I seen over 20+ planes going in and out of clouds in Fjord. My computer did not skip a beat 120 fps while I was running a capture card program and recorded the whole event. I do have a GTX 1080 video card. I must say that was the most impressive set of clouds I have seen in aces high.
