Title: AARs.
Post by: Urchin on November 30, 2001, 10:51:00 PM
This is going to be a brief one.  We upped out of A2, and went to CAP our fleet that was Southwest of the field.  As we arrived, one, possibly two, squadrons of Hellcats were attempting to occupy our airspace.  A very intense dogfight insued.  Wotan claimed 4 kills, I think I got 2, Brady got 3<?> I think.  Leitwolf claimed one (which he shot off my tail, thanks bud (although you merely postponed the inevitable)).  Raubvogel got 2 or 3, and I think Anrky said he got 1.  I think that is all of our claims.

We lost Leitwolf, LJKBear,Brady, and AG.  Wotan, myself, Raubvogel, and Anrky survived the melee and returned to A53 (I believe).  On landing, Wotan's main gear collapsed (it had to have been battle damage).  That left 3.  On takeoff, torque sent my rudderless plane hurdling at the tower at a good 100 mph (to slow to takeoff, yet to fast to slow down  :)).  I did my impression of a dog chasing a parked car.  As I told Mason... I can say on good authority that there IS saki in Heaven.  However... dumb people like me that smash into towers on takeoffs don't get any  :(.

Fun fight, F6F's!  <S>.

308 had 4 x Ju 88.  We found some juicy ships.  Unfortunately they took evasive action during our torpedo run.  We lost two aircraft to AAA, two more were damaged.  CFIT and myself went down without firing, Dasko lost an engine and got his fish away, Durr lost a flap and got his fish away.  Hits were not observed but there was no time to watch due to the intense AAA.

Dasko landed safely and Durr went back for a double dip.  Durr got his fish away but he led the fleet just a little too much.  Durr made it home safe.

Totals:
2 Ju 88 KIA.
2 Ju 88 RTB damaged.
6 fish fired at enemy fleet.

308 is done with torpedo duty for all eternity thank you very much.   :)

JV44 very nice job! You tangle with us Nightmares VMF-101 over by your fleet. I made the mistake of scattering too many of planes as scouts. So instead of hitting 16 Hellcats head on you hit 11 head on. Four were off scouting and I was busy running the Allies at first.

But you did a great job of sticking together and attacking small chunks of us all together. Basically by doing this you were able to defeat us in detail by hitting equal numbers of hellcats all at once. We never got superior numbers on you during the extended fights. Very, very nice tactics and flying there guys.

Out of the 16 that launch only 1 made it home. I am not sure how many you shot down, how many we lost to AAA fire from the fleets (at least 2 I think) and then how many crashed do to battle damage.

Only consolation we have is that our deaths cleared the way for our TBMs to come in uncontested and hit your fleet (332nd got one ship).

Ah so that was the 308th that attack TF41. I got there just in time to spot you guys coming in and put the fleet on evasives just as you were coming in.

As far as I could tell you didn't get any hits.

Nice run .. really well done especially in the face of that intense AAA fire.

Rogue Squadron had some difficulties at first with army having to go to work 30mins into the frame but we over came.  We uped 5 F4U-1Ds fully loaded and dropped ordinance after take off but, 1 crashed on take off too much ordiance on plane, to fly as cap for 412th toward HQ we hit HQ at about 22k the IJN zeros were about coalt with us but saw the lower 412th first and blew their alt advantage we dove in 3 of us stayed high to engage enmy fighters while Army suicided into HQ to go to work, Sanddog Yukon and Lhodo all dove in on the zeros Sanddog got 1 confermed yukon damaged 2 (fuel leaks) I got 2 on the first pass and none on the way out.  We returned to the CV where we rearmed and took off again this time half way through the flight we were ordered to go to A9 (btw was on the opposite side of the phillipenes from us)  we headed there got 75% of the way there when CO realized mistake and sent us back after HQ.  We droped on the HQ only seeing 2 zeros remaing to defend 1 with a fuel leak,  I got 1 the other got a away.  But not before he damaged Yukons 'sair(lost elevators) we all RTBed I ordered yukon to fly as long as he could then bail near CV, but he managed to make it back to the CV and bail in the middle of it  :D. So RS reports 2 losses, and 4 kills 2 probables and 6k droped on HQ and 16 rockets.

                  Great frame guys.

Yes, bad me, bad me Rogue. For some reason I got you confused with the 416th in my head and though you were coming out of TF41 instead of TF27th. Sorry about that and sending you against A9 when I should have had you just hit HQ.

13th TAS did very poorly on this one.

Initially assigned to patrol the West side, we were called to defend V53 after whoever was over there first got mauled by a mob of US aviators.

Only 3 of us, and we were separated while scouting the West but we all headed to 53.

Two made it to 53 and patrolled empty skies, while I refueled at 12.

As I took off 12, the other two returned to refuel. I got called off 53 to cover Port 24 alone as Swagger and Sour went to refuel. A few minutes later about 11 Hellcats were inbound to 24. I engaged the high cover for a bit and got hits on one, but mostly I was continually flying to keep my six clear. As the fight descended into the port, I made a pass or two on the ground attack aircraft, a BIG mistake. Once I deviated from pure defensive flying, it only took a few minutes to finish me off. Should've just let the port burn.

Swagger got there as they finished off the port and he was instantly in the same defensive situation I had found myself in. The other two TAS arrived a bit later and engaged but by then the Hellcats were all over the 3 Ki's. It didn't last long as the 'Cats seemed to have a definite E and top speed advantage.

One by one the Ki's went down.

Not a good night.

But hey, I had fun. I'll be back again.

Looking at the numbers 76 to 45 ... I knew from the start that our flight of 7 Zekes would get slaughtered as our KIs last frame.

The heck with it, we will try to survive as long as we can. We could climb to 30K and loiter A9, our CAP point.

Sure enought, here they come ... 20+ F4Us at 30K inbound from the north. The furball lasted for a good 10 min but 1 after the other the zekes went down.

My wingman Pollock and me were the only survivors, we worked very hard to stay way high and not to descend, doing our best to dodge F4s shooting pass. I saw Pollock having to evade an F4 closing his 6. He entered a fight of his own, I was about to come help him but I noticed 4 F4s coming high from the South. (Don't ask me where they came from).
I avoided their pass, still trying to grab alt. Pollock got a kill on a F4U WTG Pollock but last time I saw him he had 11 F4s on him   Sure enought he got shot down.

I kept playing the alt game and I witnessed the F4s departing the area toward their CV to rearm and come back with bombs.

I was at 30K, I took heading 090 to see if some more would come from the East. Co-alt I spoted 1 dot ... wohoo ... but it quickly became 1.2...5...7..13! After a quick *&^%$#@! I performed the fastest 180 of my life and ran for my life.

I came back over A9 waiting for them, I never saw them. I elected to land to make sure I would have enought fuel for the second wave. I wasn't really planing on killing any of the second wave but maybe I could make them drop their bombs before they hit A9.   :p

I refuelled, reuped and caped A9-CV43-P32. As I was about to come back and land at A9, I spoted smoke and 6 corsairs vulching.

EECK!!!   I missed them coming in. I dove and did a high speed pass guns blazing right in the middle of them trying to scare some. (high speed pass being relative in a Zeke). I couldn't hit any, they saw me coming, sure enought they started to follow me. I draged them away from the field for a couple of min then they broke away and went back for the field.

I came back to, trying to play the mind game and prevent them from hiting A9 more. When they came back for me I couldn't evade them this time. They were all over. I had to take some serious evasives with all 6 of them wanting me bad.

see pic 1

You got the idea  :) It degenerated in a turnfight, it was a blast, they were all over shooting bullets. Boy did they go into agressive turnfight. I wished I had a Niki, at least they may have been afraid of HOing me.

see pic 2

It lasted a lil bit then I eard a bang and lost a wing, I bailed right away and walked back to my base. The replay gave me the answer, looks like I colided with one of those guys, never saw him.
see pic 3
Raming me was their only hope to shoot me down   ;)  I claim a F4U, I doubt he landed back on the CV with alf a wing. (you never know, but that's what I narated to the Emperor)  :D

We defended becouse we were toataly undernumbers even befor we started the event, and therefor it was important to us to stay on the defended rol. You guys did a impressiv mission<S>.
First 1hour and 20min i think we held them back and held our defending trgt intakt.

308 with FDB come arrund the enemy CV at 11,14 12,13 arena ;) and gott ib releasing 4 torpedoes wtg. but the CV did a evasive manuvours do prevent a hitt :( he he ;)., and the 308 did also a 2 run on it with 2 Ju88 i think ;).

Hope that all IJN had fun with there assigned missions  :)

<S> to both sides, I hade a great time on this one, thx guys :)

Thought you all might be interested. Here is the map showing the orders for USN's first hop of the night.

Basically we kept pretty close to it except the 412th and Rogue squadron headed straight into the HQ area do to low fuel. And the Nightmares did the reverse patrol patron of what was shown.

Overall the USN TFs were place rather far out from their target areas and it took us a while to get to targets. Also in many cases we had fuel problems .. 332nd had 4 TBMs ditch after a successful flight because they ran out of fuel. And 412th and Rogue really were on vapors by the end of their first and second strikes.

Hope you all find the map interesting.

Here was the plan for the USN second hop or strike. Basically this was followed without many hitches. Well except down south .. the second strike from TF39 never happened since the Nightmares VMF-101 lost 15 out 16 planes do to various reasons (JV44 killed many of our planes) and 332nd had fuel problems.

Basically 1 F6F made it back and 2 TBMs but one TBM suffered a prop strike. So we decided it would be pointless to attack that enemy TF with just one F6F and one TBM.

All other strikes basically followed the below plan.

Great AAR's!

The Mongrels launched 9 AC from the CV that was a about 125 miles West of A2. We were in search of a group of ships that was trying to resupply the islands. We waited about 5 to 10 min to launch after everyone else and then took off. We lost one pilot who splashed on take off.

Turning East toward A2 we leveled at 2000 feet. After passing Palawan island we went down to 100'. The Nightmares spotted a task group in the 6,9,6 area and we headed that way. On the way they engaged a flight of N1K2's and had a lot of trouble clearing the sky. As we neared the target we broke 180 degrees and flew south because of the enemy fighters near. After 5 minutes we were given the OK to make our run. Turning north we began to search for the ships again. Ghosth and teerex spotted them and we went to 35 MAN and two notches of flaps, and doors open. As the ships grew in size the ack began to fire. Pressing closer plums of water were seen all around my AC. I droppped my torp and broke. We lost 2 AC in our run, but thanks to drill we sunk one ship, confirmed. Reports of multiple "near misses" were seen.

Nifty took charge of the flight and they returned to the CV. The flight ran out of fuel only a few miles short, two pilots did make it back. Thankfully the fleet was heading East and with only a slight change in course by a just a few degrees we were able to pick up 4 of our downed pilots.

Mongrels lost

7 - aircraft
2 - pilots
Destroyed 1 - ship

<S> To all!

Great Job to All!

Allies outstanding job following the plan and executing them nearly flawlessly.  I sure wish I could have been there to see the plan I came up with take shape.  I'm seriously bummed I missed out.

<S> to GA on his NIKI's he put against the Nightmares.  GhostDancer told me they were awesome pilots and did a great job.  It was a great challenge GA sorry I wasn't there last night to salute you then.

I'm praying I'll have my pc set up by next Friday so I can take part in the next TOD.
I should have my computer by then just don't know if I'll have time to configure the keyboard the way I like it or have my new CH HOTAS set up in time.  I've never used it before so I"m not sure what to expect.

GREAT JOB CM's.  Keep up the good work <S>.

I know you intentionally broke the map trying to make it so I could take part in it   :D

It was a great TOD. The 56th FG is enjoying flying in an AXIS role this time. Credit is due to both sides of the campaign, especially the alies for an outstanding job! Given that, I would have loved to see the numbers more equal. I know that the outcome would have been MUCH different  ;) See ya next week!

Frenchy, fyi the ubb counts each of those little faces as an image (when it says too many images).

FDBs upped 5 ki61s from A7(Fatty, Exile, Mason, Sally, Myelo).  Split up with Mason and Exile covering the 11th longitude, and the rest of us on the 12th, heading north to scout the suspected CV deployment areas.

After an unenventful 100 miles or so, we finally spotted the ships at 12.14.9.  We regrouped around them, and called in the betties.

2 planes were lost to fleet flak, and 1 was damaged.  Once the jus had sight we took off escort duty and went to die in battle.  Wasn't that far west we ran into some F4s and were able to do just that.

JG2 AAR

Sour and I protected P24 and was doing a damn good job of it until we had to split to refuel.  I stuck around to do a visual turnover to Toad, waggled my wings and went off to refuel.  About halfway there Toad called multiple bogies.  I immediately turned to go back to P24.  Sour was on landing finals for re-fuel.

I needed to get back to help Toad.  Plus I knew Sax and Beemer would be onn their way also.  I could see P24 was in trouble as Toad reported his demise.  I figured I would do some high speed passes to at least distract the American dogs.

On my third pass a F6f tucked under me to avoid the HO.  I kicked left rudder and got some hits on the port wing as we passed. I was holding my own but then additional F6Fs came down from above and I was boxed in.

All this time Sour is on RW yelling, "Hold On, B&Z, B&Z,  Hold On!!!!"

I replied,  "I am Bein$Zeein!"   It was kinda funny, ya had to be there!!    :)

At that time I could sense the fear in the American dogs as they called in all their forces in the area to stop the threat I was posing.

They kilt me!!   :(

I told Sour not to bother as P24 was pretty messed up.  Just keep an eye on the American pigs and survive to fight another day.  Which he did!

I had alot of fun and I apoligize for the lack of pilots from JG2 for this event.  It was my fault for I did not get hard answers on who would be there.

Swagger

The 412th were tasked to attack the HQ with F4u1D's.  Unfortunately, our cv was so far from the HQ that we ran didnt have enough fuel to get there and back...

Over the HQ we were engaged by 3 zeroes, Wail claiming a probable kill.  Due to our fuel state we did not turn for a second pass or to dogfight the zeroes, instead we bugged out as fast as possible for the cv, all of us with less than 1/2 fuel.

Of the 8 412th fighters that launched, 3 were damaged and 1 lost to ground fire.  The 3 damaged were all oil system hits, they all ditched within sight of the cv... send out the rescue boats.

The remaining 3 (theFatz, Midnight and myself) had to shut our engines down and glide to the cv...  saving the last fuel in our tanks for the landing.  We safely rtb'd and rearmed.

We then launched another strike on the HQ.  (However when we got there we saw the buildings previously destroyed were now rebuilt   ). This time we saw a zero over the target and engaged.  I scored hits on the zero (as did Midnight) puncturing his fuel tank.  The zero dove for the safety of the ack and we carried out our bombing runs and then headed back for the cv, fuel again alarmingly low.  I claimed a zero as damaged (later confirmed by intelligence as destroyed).

The 3 of us rtb'd successfully, rearmed once more and headed back to finish off the fighters still reported over the HQ.  We ditched our ordinance, electing to go into a fighter role.

Over the HQ we spotted a lone zero above us, as we attacked he saw that he was outnumbered and outclassed (  :D ) so elected to ram our CO.  Fortunately the hog is tough, Midnight only losing a wingtip.

Fatz and I covered Midnight as we rtb'd, the mission clock showing only minutes left.  Fortunately, Midnight was able to take a wire on the cv despite his damage.  Fatz and I then caught a wire each, bringing our total traps to 3 for the frame.   :)

I saw dots over the fleet once we were done killing f6fs  :)

My original order was to head bac to the fleet. Some guys needed to rtb for ammo.

As I got closer to the fleet I saw a large number of dots.

After being bounced by f6fs, who had a 2 to 1 advantage, plus 3k alt on us and killing most, but losing 4 ourselves. I contradicted myself and ordered a fast rtb to a53.

I can only imagine what would have happened had we engaged those cons over the fleet.

Especially now that I know they were tbms....... :)

I still had 307 rounds left no damage. But the idiot I am I porked my landing, ripped my gear, and from the tower watched Urchin, who had lost his rudder, colide with the tower.

What might have been.............

Hell Wotan don't feel bad on your call. You did great tackling 2 to 1 odds versus us Hellcats. We all make bad calls and wonder what might have been.

Personally I am still kicking myself in the bellybutton on splitting my 16 Hellcats up into three groups (4 scouting and 1 C in C, then one group to the N of IJN fleet of about 6 versus you guys and then a second group of 6 right over the IJN Fleet).

I am still wondering what would have happened if I did not split my forces and instead hit you guys head on with all 16 Hellcats at once.  ;)

Live and learn.

Ripsnort, read my report above    :D ... who is the pilot missing a wingtip after colision? Did he made it back?

Your stats say :
BigJim, Jimbear, Phantom4, Snafu, Sundog, Swoop, Weave killed by gunners.
Razor, Swat, Zippathu shot down.
Hizakite crash landed.
Raider ditched.
Acid, Pluto, Ranger, Vulcan and yourself only made it back.

That's like 5 out of 17 who did made it back from your squad, what is your real RTB count?

I know that my death was due to crash on take off (I had lost right flap and rudder). I guess I should have just sat out 2nd hop due to damage, I know several of the other "kill by unknown gunner" deaths were crashes on take off or landing.

Phantom4
