Title: Lt. Curtiss W. Mahanna - P-51C "Iowa Belle" - 23rd FG, 74th FS - AH3 Adoption
Post by: Vraciu on June 26, 2018, 11:07:02 AM
This is the P-51C (serial and sub-type unknown) "Iowa Belle" of the 23rd Fighter Group, 74th Fighter Squadron flown by Lieutenat Curtiss W. Mahanna based out of Luliang, China.  Lt. Mahanna scored three victories (one Oscar and one Tojo on 11 November 1944, and another Oscar on 14 January 1945) in this aircraft before air opposition waned toward war's end.

This airplane was originally skinned by Player1.  It was adopted and updated for Aces High 3.  I preserved as much of his nose art and tail paint (both with modifications for accuracy) as I could.   Unfortunately for the nose art it was too small so I wound up doing a lot of cutting and pasting to expand it rather than redraw it completely--which would have been faster, but as always, I try to salvage something from the original if I can.   The A was wrong so I was forced to redraw that entirely.

Thank you.

Nice improvement.

Thanks.  I boned up the kill flags.  Not fatal but wanted to make them a little less bold.

Good improvement. I like your stains. (I think this is the first time I have ever said that to someone, a special moment)

Was the tail gloss or flat black? The flat black anti-glare with a gloss black tail would look nice in the game.

Thank you, kindly.  I appreciate that.

The tail is flat best I can tell.  I went with a semi-flat sheen there.

The father of hometown acquaintance of mine flew P-51s with this group.  Ernie Harper flew "NOK OUT"

Way cool.  I was sorry I didn't learn this until well after he passed though.  What an experience that must've been.

Indeed.

Cool nose art, btw.
