I believe you have something similar to this.  It appears they left it bare metal instead of white and used red for the rest of it.

Could be that's the paint they had on hand.  it's a 9th AF group so it would have been on the continent, not in England with a fixed permanent airfield to work out of.  That or maybe with the lack of color on those 51s, they wanted the kill markings to stand out a bit

Sound right.  I originally skinned them in an orange, faded to look sun-bleached.   I will try the red.
