Title: Porky II
Post by: Greebo on July 17, 2018, 02:53:30 AM
Thanks to Lyric1 for finding me the info for this update of Rogerdee's 2006 309th FS Spit 9 skin.
Porky II was a Spitfire Mk IX was flown by Lt Robert Connor of the 31st FG, 309th FS during 1943. It carried nose art depicting the cartoon character Porky Pig, a reference to Connor's squadron nickname of Porky. The 309th FS converted from P-39s to Spitfire Vs on arrival in Britain during 1942 and flew these in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. In April 1943 the squadron received their first Spitfire Mk IXs and these were often used to provide top cover for Spitfire Mk Vs. In March 1944 the 309th swapped their Spitfires for longer ranged Mustangs to allow them to escort USAAF bombers over southern Germany.

BE-dabe-de-be that's be-autiful!
There is a Spitfire documentary out today, but I couldn't find it in a theater near me.

That's a great skin. Wow.
Only minor nitpick I see is the lack of a gap between the spinner and the cowling. Seems to stand out more with these colors than your usual stuff. I don't know if drawing a black line fixes that the same as it does on the Mustang but It's something to think about.
Either way this is a really cool bit of work.

Thanks guys, glad you like it.
The light coloured area between the red spinner and grey fuselage represents the back plate of the spinner. It shows as a lighter shade on the photo I have of the aircraft. I reckon the ground crew removed the Sky-painted spinner and repainted it in Mediterranean theatre red but could not be bothered to remove the propeller in order to get at the backplate and so just left the back plate in Sky.

Yes, but I would think you'd have a black space between that and the cowling. They almost look fused there if you get my drift.

I have now added a black line at the rear of the spinner, thanks for the suggestion.
Sorry but the NMF Spit 16 is not an orphaned skin so I won't be able to update it. To become an orphaned skin its original skinner has to have closed his AH account over a year ago.

Actually Greebo, it is six months after the account deletion the skins become orphans. Might want to check later today.
Matter of fact, you can check now.

Glad to help. It pales in comparison to your help and constructive suggestions with my skins. :salute

It is really not a legit Spit XVI its a Spit IX and should not be even in game. Post war and unarmed.

There is one Spit in the 31st that got similar treatment (NMF) but I don’t think it was in combat, just a hack. However, it WAS damaged by flak and written off...so that’s combat.

Squadron hacks usually had their guns removed which is a no no as far as AH fighter skins are concerned. That's why we can skin an armed photo recon Spit but not an unarmed one.
Soit seems Kev's NMF Spit 16 is ineligible as an AH skin in lots of ways; it was an early Mk 9 and not a 16, was not armed, didn't see combat and was probably post-war. There are some NMF early Spit 9s that did see combat that I can skin as an AH Mk 9, but no NMF Mk 16s or late Mk 9s that saw combat and so I can skin as a Mk 16 that I know of. A late Mk 9 can be skinned as a Mk 16 as the only fundamental difference between them was where the engine was made. However for me to do so the Spit in question would have to resemble our Mk 16 to a degree. Have the larger vertical tail, and either the E wing and/or the clipped wing tips.

Usually, but not always. And it was damaged by enemy flak. So we will have to look at it. I certainly wouldn’t fly an unarmed hack in a combat area.

Just FYI; I will be removing that skin from the game.

There are numerous potential ARMED natural metal Spits out there to be skinned so I am guessing It's not a huge loss.

There are more NMF Spit 5, 8 and 9s that can be skinned or updated. However Puller was after an updated NMF 16 and now not only is that not going to happen but the current skin's going to be withdrawn as well. So if I could find a suitable replacement Mk 16 I would skin it. I suspect any photos of NMF Spit 16s are going to turn out to be hacks or be post war aircraft.
BTW are you sure your 31st FG squadron hack was damaged by enemy flak?

That's what I read. I didn't do any further research because it was not relevant to what I was seeking, but that's what it said. Written off by enemy flak. Pilot landed safely.

What a drag... :(
Oh well, at least I drew attention to something that wasn't supposed to be in game...
