One can only hope they get taken out before innocent folks are harmed.

I laugh.  Just by choosing reduced thrust vs. full I can save more gas in one day--maybe even one takeoff--than they will in a year.

Not all Prius owners are smug tree huggers. My step-mom has one because her job involves a huge amount of driving. For her, owning a Prius is smart business when you drive 800-1000 miles a week.

She’s the exception not the rule.

Meanwhile, I’ve planted 42 trees in my yard...

Toyota's all new Prius actually reduces a Prius drivers' carbon footprint to zero.  Guaranteed !!!!

Why did it take Toyota so long to finally get it right?

I don't own or drive a Prius but I will say, its not just Prius
drivers doing those idiot moves... I have driven in Atlanta, Ga, Nashville, Tn, as well as other large
cities... I got to tell ya... the lousy driving skills are not limited to the Prius but other
cars as well

The major problem is the drivers themselves  :aok

Well just remember 9 out of 10 drivers think they are above average.

Even better. You can carry 3 or 4 of those at a time and probably fit another in the back seat.

Over a 20+ year period, can’t recall seeing a Prius driving at or near the speed limit down the interstate.  They are usually 20-30 mph over the limit, saving gas, of course.

When I was living in Iowa City we had a ton of Prius drivers, and a ton of bicyclists because it is a college town (remember the 90's TV show Coach?  That was actually Iowa City, and our football coach Hayden Fry)

Anyway I digress....

If I was coming up to a red light I often had a choice to make.

A.  Stop behind a prius in one lane
B.  Stop behind bicyclists in the other lane

Option B was ALWAYS more expedient.

I don't have any carbon stuck to my shoes therefore my C footprint is zero. That is unless, I'm walking in carbon and leave footprints in the carbon.

Prius drivers trying to maximize miles per gallon don't speed on the highway since the hybrid system has zero benefit in steady state cruising over a yaris or corolla.

Prius is about recouping energy from a braking event and applying it to the next acceleration event.

I've been 114mph in one and it was cake.

I had my 1969 Dodge Charger up to 140 and I felt like it wanted to start flying so I backed off.

Did 210 mph in a Ferrari at Daytona once.   That’s as close to airsick as you can get in a car.  Whew.

I was involved in an accident recently where a Prius rear ended my F-150 because he was hit from behind by a mid size Chevy (gotta love I-4 Tampa at rush hour).  Let's just say the Prius lost that fight badly while the Chevy and my Ford drove away with very little bumper damage.  That Prius literally came apart.  I'll let someone else "save the planet".  No way I'd drive one of those death traps.

I can imagine that!

Reminds me of the time I was in my 1978 Mercury Marquis Brougham (or as I liked to call it "Brooke's Light Armored Urban Assault Vehicle"), constructed back in the days when there weren't "crumple zones".  I got rear ended by a 1990's Suburban.  My Mercury was OK, but the poor Suburban's front end was smashed up.

Worth noticing is that isnt really a good thing. Ok its fine in a low speed impact but you also have to remember that if the car doesnt take care of the force of the impact then you will. It doesnt matter if the speed is low enough but in a high energy collision you really want those "crumple zones" because without them the force on the people in the car will be much larger.

I know and agree.  I want crumple zones.  I want air bags.  I want fuel efficiency.

But my 1978 Mercury was a dinosaur from an earlier epoch.  It was like a land-based aircraft carrier.  It was one of those cars where, after a collision, you might hose the brains, bits of skull, and blood off the dashboard, and it's good to go for the next driver.  It had an "economy" 6.6 liter engine. Right before I sold it, it was getting 7 miles to the gallon and probably about 20 miles to the gallon of power steering fluid.

Sounds like my families Chrysler Cordoba...the 8trak worked longer than the tapes did. Think we sold it in 87? Was funny, went from a super size V8 battle beast of a car...to a Toyota Tercel hatchback :O  After the first fill up,dad was doing math in his head, about all the money he COULD have saved in gas JUST LAST year...hit a deer and messed that toyota all up. DEER was fine. :rofl That Cordoba ate Trees,Deer, heck think it could have stopped a train. Zeroed the whole gas savings a bit  :x Then when he drove it to my Mom's Folks house...him Navy Vet served in ww2 in South Pacific  Yes wasnt good :uhoh

My 1992 Buick Regal with 450K miles has crumple zones but a Prius would bounce off it like a racquetball.

Same thing happened when I was a kid.  My family traded in our mid 1970s Ford LTD and came home with a Chevy Nova (Made under License by Toyota)  It was basically just a Carolla with a bow tie on the grill.

Old cars are fun and have their personalities for sure, Ive had a few of my own. But after enough breakdowns its stops being funny..
__

A lot of people thinks that the bigger, more rigid cars if yesterday are better in  a collision but unsurprisingly even a small modern car is better than an old and bigger one.

Even if the engine compartment is completely disintegrated on the Yaris, the occupant area is intact. And that is against a car 50% heavier than itself.

Yugo, Lada, Yaris, Corolla's (excluding their 4x4 wagon 5-speed rockets), any pre-2005 Hyundai, Chevette (though they were easy to work on), Justy, and the Neon.

I've noticed those "offset from center head on collisions" featuring old vs new cars is purposely set up such that the frame rail on that side is not involved at all in the collision.
