Title: Discord server?
Post by: AAIK on July 23, 2018, 11:24:19 AM
It seems to be the new trendy app atm. It can replace forums, IRC and Teamspeak all at the same time and has a nifty convienence of loading up and connecting at startup.

I currently use it for a community, myself. I havent had any real complaints about it other then the rare downtime.

I wonder what HTC would think of it?

I think it's a great idea! An AH Discord server when we just feel like hanging on out!

We can have countries channels. "200". Squad channels and more! This can also be a great tool if new players need help with stuff. Most people know how Discord work already.

I can setup a server in a few hours if you want AAIK. Would be fun! An official would be even better!

But I don't see it replace the forum though.

Cheers!

But I don't see it replace the forum though.

I am planning to try that on my own, I am not sure how its going to go down.

Discord has a fancy ability to remember messages, so if you leave the server and come back days/months later you can scroll up and update yourself with all the messages you missed. Which is why I reckon it has the ability to replace a forum.

Yes, an official one would be better.

Well let me refraice (don't know the actual spelling) that. It would compliment the forum rather than replace it!

That is very possible as well.

We checked out Discord for my squad. Think of it as Facebook\Skype for free, accessed from PC or your smartphone in the middle of your game. Means your squad can have all of it's members at the same time in different games talking to each other. Then if one of those games suddenly heats up, you all can change games and hoard that fun. Sometimes the way the bish side is short on players, then you get a good roll against one of their feilds going. Then out of nowhere a hoard shows up makes me wonder.

Pretty much it's like having a private version of Facebook with voice, this link is to a Discord community list. Anime, games, prono, politics, the usual but, all private with no advertisers or personal info collecting. It's one of the reasons you don't see teenagers on Facebook anymore. And yes they actively push their API as the next generation of in game communications to the gaming industry.

https://discord.me/

Here is a list of games cleared for using the Discord Overlay API.

Final Fantasy XIV    World of Warcraft    League of Legends
Hearthstone             Overwatch                     Guild Wars 2
Minecraft                    Smite                       osu!
Warframe                      Rocket League              CS:GO
Garry's Mod              Diablo 3                     DOTA 2
Heroes of the Storm

Right now there is a problem with anvirius triggering by the Discord Overlay. And why do they talk to their customers like they are 13 years old at an MGM theme park getting ready to do Hairy Potter?

SUPER IMPORTANT NOTE:

At the moment, the overlay is some pretty intense tech with a bit of arcane magic going on under the hood. Unfortunately, our various Anti-Virus software buddies haven't quite finished prodding Discord's files for the 100% good to go. Long story short:

Enabling the overlay might get Discord flagged by your Anti-Virus software. This is ok! We can guarantee it is a false positive. We're working with all the different companies to get Discord whitelisted.

As you go into your software to add Discord to accepted processes, know that any file path that matches this one is 100% organic, certified, robograss-fed, homegrown Discord goodness:

%appdata%\discord\0.0.***highest-number***\modules

(the ***highest-number*** refers to the latest version of Discord. Your path will have different text here.)

You can whitelist files with that path with no problem.

And they warn some games may experience crashes from Discord and the company has an interesting way of trying to make users think they are "HELPING". Sounds like everyone using it for their game is a Patch 36 Beta tester at this point.

Want some extra credit?

We've really got our work cut out for us here. Luckily, you can help us out.

If you do experience the overlay crashing a game, grab this log:

%appdata%\discord\0.0.***highest-number***\modules\discord_hook\hook

And shoot us an email at support@discordapp.com.

Make sure you let us know what issue you ran into, and what game! It'll help us sort out the problem appropriately.

Here is a link to see the player interface, yep, gets you hot and bothered for the 21st century smartphone interface bling. And more importantly, it's FREE which all the gamers in the know demand on the Internet. Wonder who ends up paying for the server and it's maintenance? I think the API to imbed into a game has some licensing fees.

https://discordapp.com/features

They say this is all free, they have received $30M in venture capital by 6 large players in the Industry. ACCEL Partners, Benchmark Capitol, Greylock Partners, Tencent (Chinese National), Time Warner, and YW (South Africa). And they say they do not collect private data just like Facebook said in the beginning. Then how do they pay back $30M especially if an investment firm from China is involved? So when a game company imbeds this into their game, what are they really getting into bed with? Free is such wonderful word.......

Look at the work HTC has to do to keep the forums some what clean. Imagine what they would have to do with multiple chat feeds. You would essentially double the work load they endure for the forums.

My squad have been using Teamspeak since 7 years, there are free servers out there. quality is so much better, and options for push to talk, or talk to talk.

At the beginning of last year Discord got $50M U.S. in funding.  Since then they have gotten another $79M U.S. and still have not shown a plan on how they are going to make money, other than to ask users for donations.

Last year, they, reportedly, had $3M in revenue with 97 employees.  Does not take a rocket scientist to see they are losing money every month and have been since day one.  Investors have kept them afloat, but how much longer will they be able to keep running it like that?

I see a buyout in the near future.  No telling what will happen to them.

That may all be. But for the time being it's still a great community gathering place.

Teamspeak is far better in quality, than Discord. Discord is nice for the text chat, but that's about it.

The only reason I brought it up was as a business, we should not be pouring resources into something which has not achieved financial stability yet.  Now, that is my observation and opinion, which does not reflect HiTech's take on the matter. but if he asks.....

My response was not only directed at you. And i do understand concerns about Discord. But i also see a benefit regarding promotion towards the "new" generation on gamers/flight enthusiasts. Also it would help me (or others) immensely to come into contact with new players so i can help them setup or explain stuff if they would jump into a help channel. I find Discord servers easier accessible than a forum. I for one would hang out there.

Also i do enjoy you expressing your own vision. <S>

You brought up some good points skuzzy. I probably should of looked up the situation before I suggested it. They do have a subscription programme like AH for extra features but I have no idea of how many people actually take part in that.

Tensen is about to challenge Valve as a game source. Discord would make a perfect portal. It is already designed to hook gen-y\z like facebook was to hook baby boomers and gen-x. Games and related venues for gen-y\z are becoming the new social media. Tensen became the conglomerate it is today by copying applications and branding them with their name. If Discord does not generate a revenue stream or, has no intention to, startups in the SF Bay area now develop products looking to be bought out. Investments can be written off as the cost of doing business and gaming\social media is where a goldmine of gen-y\z will be with their money.
