Title: Fire fighting fighter.
Post by: Zimme83 on July 25, 2018, 09:20:22 AM
The air force just dropped a Laser guided bomb (GBU-49) over one of the big forrest fires in W Sweden in order to stop the fire. It seems to have been successful as the blast put out the fire in a 100m radius.
This particular fire is partly on a military firing range with a lot of unexploded ammunition so it have been impossible for firefighters to work in those areas and its also hard to use helicopters and water bombers.

Pretty expensive fire fighting expenditure. Wonder what the cost comparison is between the GBU and an air tanker?

Its quite expensive yes, but as I said, there are areas where the water bombers cannot operate due to the risk from unexploded ammunition. And this was more of a test. The bomb fell within the firing range so in reality its more like an exercise for the Air force, only that the firing range is on fire.. But as they said, now they have another tool in their tool box..

Back in 60s, Soviet Union used nukes to extinguish out of control gas well fire; few more sanctions and Russians could help. https://youtu.be/S57Xq03njsc
