upon initiating AH from the desktop, I received an error
"initialization failed with -9 mainwld_failed-1"??

That is a corrupt installation or patch.  Simply remove any desktop ICONS you have to start the game, then download the full version of the game and install it over the top of your existing installation allowing it to make a new desktop ICON.
