Title: P-40C Clive Caldwell

Tomahawk IIb(P-40C) flown by Clive "Killer" Caldwell of 250 Squadron RAF on December 5, 1941. Caldwell was the highest Australian born ace of WWII, with 28.5 victories. Caldwell earned notoriety in the battles to relieve Tobruk in Libya. His first victory came during Operation Battleaxe on June, 26th. By the end of November, Caldwell had 11 victories and was promoted to flight leader. On December 5th, Caldwell single-handedly shot down five Ju 87 Stukas.

Caldwell's nickname of "Killer" was not one he liked himself, but it was earned through his evident tenacity in battle. In one particular engagement on August 29th 1941, Caldwell destroyed a Bf 109F only after sustaining wounds and severe damage to his P-40 from his soon-to-be victim. He also had a reputation for strafing Axis ground forces and even his own shadow on the desert surface to practice gunnery. It was a rare occurrence for Caldwell to return with ammunition remaining.

Caldwell would take command of the famous 112 "Shark" Squadron in February 1942 and later be transferred back to Australia to lead the Spitfires of 1st Fighter Wing RAAF from Darwin.
