Title: Need some training
Post by: HomeBoy on January 08, 2019, 01:26:35 AM
Wow!  Am I ever getting a dose of humility in this game.

I'm trying to come back after more than 10 years of RL etc.  I was never better than average anyway and with so many exiting the game, it seems all that's left are the aces.   This has seriously exposed me as quite the dweeb.  I'm getting my butt handed to me with every sortie!

So..... if you feel you might have something to offer this ole crusty veteran I am most willing to learn and promise to be an attentive student.  I've been watching VudoVince's most excellent youtube videos and trying to emulate him but I feel that some one-one training would help me a lot.

If you are willing and would like the challenge, please let me know.   I would be most grateful

YEP, I feel ya and I have been regular in game for 4 years, so NO SHAME on getting killed. Record your fights and then study them! Its invaluable tooll.

I am not a trainer but ...I will fight you in MP arena if for nothing more than you found a way to get film. OOPS, hope I didnt awake a sleeping dragon lol.... You should sign up for our 12 hours straight scenario ! Plenty of guys that will watch you backside. A lot less 3 on 1"s than in Melee Arena. It looks like a GREAT set up, USA vs Japan, Leytey gulf.

Thanks 1stpar3.  Yes, I know the value of recording.  I should start doing that.  Thanks for the heads up about the scenario.  I'll have to look into that.   Be happy to hook up with you any time.   Thank you sir!

I am usually on in the evenings to late night. Ill be heading back to work Friday for a few weeks so wont be on until late January. In game name is Clu.

Homeboy, what time zone are you in, and what times would work best for you. My RL schedule is a little chaotic right now, but I'm sure we can find some time to knock the rust off. Oh and it's good to see you back.

Thanks for the kind replies.

I am in the Eastern time zone.   I'm retired now so just about any time works for me.

Clu,  any time you want to do some TA work will be fine.  If we see each other maybe we can make that happen.   Thanks!

Sik, thank you for offering to help me.  Sounds like my schedule is more open than yours.   If you want,  drop me a message and let me know when you might have time.   I'll keep an eye out for you.

Great to hear from you TequllaChaser.   Glad you're still around.   I'm happy to be back.   Wish I could stay alive more than 15 seconds though!  :)

No worries homeboy. I notice most players flying these days have better SA and dogfighting skills. Its due to less new baby seals flying.

Progress report time!

Great to see some posts about old players (like me) coming back as well as some new blood too.   Thought a progress report might be educational to these two groups of players (and anybody else for that matter).

Many thanks and  :salute to Clu and Sik1 (who was not feeling well but spent time with me anyway!) who were kind enough to spend a little time with me in the TA.  Both revealed to me that my two biggest problems are SA and energy management.  I already knew that actually but I got some good tips on how I might improve that.

First, concerning SA, Clu advised me to work on circling around the drones trying to maintain sight of them.   I used to do this and had forgotten about it.   I've started doing that again and it does help a lot.  I also adjusted my TIR speed from 2 to 1 and increased my smooth from 10 to the maximum (40).   This seemed counter-intuitive to me as it seemed I want more speed but just the opposite is actually the case (for me).  Now, it simulates "natural" head movement.   That was a huge improvement.

Another simple improvement was adding the HUD to my cockpit.   I've always avoided such "unrealistic" devices but since I am so bad at this anyway, I decided what the heck!   It really does help me not lose altitude in an engagement.   I can glance up at the HUD and quickly see if I've lost altitude and I know that I'm killing my smash.   I'm unashamed to now sport a spanking new HUD device right there in the cockpit of my vintage WW2 aircraft.   So sue me!   :rofl

Sik advised me to practice flying around as slowly as possible offline so as to get the feel for the limits of the plane.   This is actually something I always did in RC when warming up for an aerobatic program.   I have added flying through the hangers and flying around inverted (though appears not to be fully modeled) as part of that practice procedure.  This has definitely helped.

Clu encouraged me to learn to fly defensively.   Rather than think about getting the kill, learn to evade, frustrate the attacker, etc. and just let the kills come when the opportunity presents itself (that opportunity has yet to present itself!  :o ).   I've been really concentrating on that to the point where I've flown sorties without ever flying a shot even though I engaged a number of targets.   I've never had a great KTD in this game and my current 0.25 may be the lowest I've EVER had since 1999 but I refuse to be discouraged about it.   This is a training schedule here and I'm in my first month.  Numbers don't matter right now (if they ever will).

Ok, final thoughts.    Though I have several serious weaknesses as a fighter pilot, I know how to fly an airplane and have been flying with precision for many years.   How can I bring my flying skills into making me a better fighter?   How can I use my strengths to overcome my weakness?  This is my quest.  I feel in my spirit that there is a great fighter pilot trying to break out. [Please take this as tongue-in-cheek as I intend    ].

I hope this serves as inspiration to any who have been as discouraged as I have been.  Though this is as hard as anything I've ever  tried to do, it is an exciting and fulfilling journey.

Trim for speed is important. An exercise I like is flying through the hangers then zooming to a stall. You gain max height with each pass so your speed through the hanger increases. You also practice your stall turns.
