Title: Er, CM's?
Post by: Ripsnort on November 13, 2001, 10:19:00 AM
I've just been informed that there was no wind speed in the TOD 1st frame.  First off, you HAVE to have some wind speed, there is not a WW2 carrier that did NOT turn into the wind to launch aircraft.  In AH, if you fully load a Hellcat or F4U down with rockets, bombs, fuel, then attempt to launch with NO wind..the odds are 50/50 with even experienced flyers, on a successful take off.

Food for thought.

(Now I understand why I lost 80% of my men on take offs..., silly me)

My heads screwed on wrong, disregard, the CV IS moving forward at 42 MPH, right?  Okay. no problem.

Our problem was this:

I have never been successful 'backing up' my plane on a deck, done it right by the book (start engine, tap throttle alittle to release brakes, cut throttle, roll backwards...at least its suppose to work that way, my plane just sits there)

A few of us caught the last few wires, and subsequently, couldn't muster enough airspeed to relaunch with a heavy load.

I will alter load outs to compensate...disregard this thread CM's.

Have to disagree.

Our squad has an award for taking off with an F4UD with 100% fuel and 2 1000 lb bombs. Several of us have done it.

To make sure I just went in to the SEA. Turned off the wind, Set a course downwind just so there is no mistake.

1st Try - F6F 100% fuel, and 2 1000 lb bombs. No problem.
2nd Try - F4UD 100% fuel, with 1 DT and 1 1000 lb bomb. Almost, but splashed.
3rd Try - F4UD 100% fuel, with 1 DT and 1 1000 lb bomb. Made it.
4rd Try… same as 3rd
5th Try… same as 3rd

I will add this is "without" backing up.

Just takes practice. Suggest the following.

1.   Hold your breaks.
2.   WEP
3.   Flaps as you roll, (I use full flaps)

Not easy, but many in my squad have done it 3 for 3.

Having said all that I told skernsk and sling to set it up as they please.

Daddog, read the WHOLE thread:

"A few of us caught the last few wires, and subsequently, couldn't muster enough airspeed to relaunch with a heavy load."

I did. When I saw the thread the last post was from you saying "Thanks banana". I went into the SEA, did my stuff, came back, posted and here we are.  ;)

rip you guys know how yo "back up" on a cv?
you can roll off the end if ya aint carefull

I dont even fly them planes but fully loaded I can get umm up consistantly.

after ya land get your hook up flaps up etc.
Touch the throttle forward just abit you'll begin to roll back real slow but it will pick up a bit. use rudder to keep straight.
Brake before ya fall off. You end up with more runway then ya started  with at spawn.

The trick is to crack the throttle and leave it cracked a little.  If you cut it, the brakes re-engage.

I don't have a throttle and have to use the keyboard.  I have no problem backing up if I just tap the + key two times.  I'm not sure if that's Manifold or RPM but I'm just increasing the one and that gets me to roll backwards.

(BTW, My joystick is only mapped with full throttle, off throttle, fire both weapons...I gotta get me a fancy new rig.  I can't even use the view hat in the 45 degree angles, just forward, back, left and right.)
