Title: enemy icons changes with last patch?
Post by: ccvi on March 05, 2019, 03:16:11 PM
I think they are now rurning on/off with gees? Or something like that. It's slightly irritating, because before when an icon turned off it implied that the enemy got killed.

I have no idea what you are trying to describe.

I was seeing enemy icons turn themselves off when pulling some gees. Last flight at least.

Retrying now it maybe seems to be specific viewing directions, particularly left/right+up and left/right+back, and then the enemy being in certain sectors of the view, not related to gees. In the F4u. Could it be that parts of the canopy are blocking the view thus hiding the icon, but are too close in to be drawn so not hiding the plane itself?

Also, I think visibility of GVs seems to be improved. Or maybe the few I just saw were not as skilled in hiding as most others.

Moving the head back (cursor down) it indeed moved through parts of the cockpit.

I've see that occur with icons if my planes altitude gains or loses on enemy planes altitude position, but icon would only disappear for a second at most. Usually with off line drone shooting practice.

Never seen this behavior. Except with Bombers. Have been told that this "loss of Icon and its temporary" is pilot jumping into a gunner position? That is the rumor at least.

No, it's view points that look through parts if the cockpit. The plane being physically behind the parts gets no icon, but the cockpit parts are so close to the eye that they are not drawn, so the plane itself is visible.

It's how some of the new defaults of the F4u-1d are set up.

It was already brought up that the corsair's views changed...you need to reset you views in it

Changed, and reset/set up again to like the views - yes. Change to make them work - no. I don't think it should even be possible to set them up in a way that icons are hidden by something invisible. Because simply there's no visual cue on what's going on, because... invisible.

Does this occur in VR or with any form of head tracking, too? Moving the head, and suddenly icons disappear? Is it "normal"? A feature?

My gaming gear is old skool, hat on the stick etc. Yet I see icons disappear at certain conditions. Either they get blocked by ground clutter or clouds. Note that neither of them has to be significant to hide the icon. Especially with clouds it's sometimes hard to tell whether or not there's an angel hair flowing just in front of you or the enemy icon. The issue with digital clouds is that they're made out of white lines whereas real clouds are made out of reflecting, shiny, optically challenging droplets.

This is not about clouds or trees or other at least partially visible objects hiding icons. This is about invisible (not drawn) cockpit parts hiding icons.

The enemy is in plain sight, nothing anywhere near that could hide it. Still, suddenly when seen through a certain view, the icon vanishes for no obvious reason. When in that view, moving the head back, it reveals a part of the cockpit. That part of the cockpit then hides the plane.

There's only two reasonable behaviors:
- The cockpit is drawn, the plane is not (hidden behind the cockpit), and the icon is hidden, too
- The cockpit is not drawn, the plane is visible, and so is its icon

Either its possible to look through the cockpit (through parts of the cockpit that are not drawn), or it is not.

Would a scratch in the canopy be the very part of the cockpit that can hide an icon?

If the scratch is sufficiently visible to convey to the user that visibility is limited due to it, then yes.

The problem here is that it's sort of breaking the 3rd wall. The limitation isn't simulated, but occurs due to a limitation of the simulation itself (things too close to the eye are not drawn vs. icons hidden by anything between the eye and the plane). And it never seems to have occurred before, even with views cutting through the cockpits. Its as if there's parts of the cockpits that hide icons, and other parts that don't, and views so far have only clipped the latter.
