If AI is currently engage in a fight and their patrol or attack segment times out, if enemy are still within the 1500/3000yd trigger range, they should not switch to a non-combat segment.
It's kinda goofy for them to stop mid fight and start flying away straight and level in cruise mode.
:huh

You have control, simply make the next segment attack or patrol.

So this occurred when they had several patrol segments. Eventually they had segments for their pattern and landing. Eventually you at least have to have a landing segment.
I had intercepted the patrol, activated their combat mode then started dragging them back to my side toward friendlies so as to even the numbers. The dragging and engaging cycles were enough to burn through all their patrol segments I guess.
In the middle of a dogfight they stopped and started to fly home to enter their landing pattern. Which means I then just fall in behind them and shoot them in the back.
Regardless if I had burned through all the patrol segments up to their landing segments, they shouldn't just go brain dead in the middle of a shooting fight.
You can't always predict how long combats are going to last.
An alternative would be to have a sane defensive mode behavior they can drop in to if being shot at , even if they are in cruise or landing mode. It never really makes sense to ignore an enemy 50yd on your six shooting you.

Then they would just disappear when the last segment ended.

My landing pattern segments are cruise. Then a landing segment. Then a run-out segment. If he had made it to the end of the run-out he would have disappeared.
He never made it that far. As soon as he stopped the dogfight and started flying straight for the cruise/pattern segment, I rolled in behind him and shot him to shreds. If he had just disappeared in front of me, that wouldn't have been any better. :)
What he should have done, IMHO, is once he was engaged in a fight, keep fighting until he is dead, the enemy is dead and no others are in range, or he runs out of fuel. Regardless of any other segments.
I dunno. Maybe it was wife-ack. ;)

Wait. Maybe I'm misunderstanding.
Are you saying you think the AI should have kept fighting all through is cruise segments and then just disappear?
If that is what you are saying maybe I need to set up a test and get film.
We were in a dogfight and he just started flying straight. I assumed that it was because he had hit the time from his landing pattern cruise segment. Maybe something else was going on?

Maybe by the way you were flying.... he figured you were done. :neener:

I'm just saying you run into a no win situation no matter if it keeps fighting or not. I.E. all except the final segment could be combat but at some point it must run or disappears.

I see what you are saying.
I guess my ideal preference would be that if the AI is in the middle of combat, he stays in combat until the coast is clear. That mode would override all other segments until the coast is clear even if that means flying beyond the original route time. So he should not just disappear at the end of the route time if he is still in combat.
If necessary he would keep maneuvering until he ran out of fuel and still continue until he crashes.
If the enemy is eliminated or sufficient separation is achieved, then let him execute the next segment. Or disappear then if needed.
That would have have seemed a lot more realistic to the player than seeing him just decide to stop fighting and fly straight. Like a union worker quitting at 5pm! :D
Or maybe I just should have killed him quicker. ;)

Yeah, well, why do you think I was leading them to friendlies?
If ack would kill AI, I would have led them to that. :D
