Installation:

To use the EAW textures in the Aces High Terrain Editor, copy all files
to the directory of the terrain you are working on.
For example:
You want to apply EAW texture on your terrain called "eawtest":
Copy all the texture files to the "aheditor/terrains/eawtest" -directory.
How to use the EAW textures with the AH Terrain Editor:

When you open eawtest -terrain in the editor, you can see the EAW textures. Edit your terrain
to your liking. When you are ready, build your terrain, and copy the eawtest.res -file to your "Aces High/terrains" -directory. The textures will be included in the eawtext.res file.
Launch Aces High, choose "eawtest" terrain, and enjoy the new graphics!
Some tips:

-If you want city textures to your terrain, use the "snow" option
-City must be surrounded by grassy rock, otherwise the transition is not smooth
-Instead of large areas of continous field/grass/rock/grassy rock, mix them together for a better look

OK, so if your goal is to get one of these maps to be made "official" one day, would you then have to attach the "alien" textures to the file, so that "everyone" would have them???
If so, are there any permission problems vis a vis the EAW people who designed them?
Any problems with HTC perhaps not condoning their use in their game?
I've already got a bunch of these textures, but haven't started using them because I wasn't sure they could be easily used within AH.
Anybody who can answer authoritatively on this issue???

Now how do the Falcon 4.0 textures fit into all of this? I know people are using them in EAW (both Microprose titles), so I would imagine it would be a similar process.
Woohoo! Let's hope this is the beginning of real player effort brought to on-line gaming and isn't just the domain of the boxes!

The textures are included within the terrain file. The terrain builder decides what textures are used with the terrain as he makes it with the editor, and the end-user cannot change that. Microprose released the original EAW textures with "EAW picpac" so that people could edit them to make their own textures in EAW.
The readme doesn't mention using the textures in another game, so I guess it is allowed. Here's the beginning of the original picpac readme:

Modifying the EAW art files is an unsupported feature, but it isn't terribly complicated. You'll need to be comfortable with moving files from folder to folder, opening up an MS-DOS window, typing basic DOS commands, and of course loading, changing and saving .PCX files with your drawing program.
This package contains textures for the aircraft exteriors (in the "Planes" folder), virtual cockpit interiors ("Cockpits" folder), which include the inside views of the wings, interior frames and cockpit dials, and the land textures (in the "Terrain" folder). There is also a utility called PicPac that is run from an MS-DOS prompt and which you must use to convert the raw .PCX data to EAW's compressed format. (The static cockpit views are hard-coded to only work in 640x480 mode, are very large and are not included--you can only change the virtual cockpit interiors with this kit).
For all files, the easiest method is probably to copy the files you want to change, along with the picpac.exe program, into a working folder that you've created, such as C:\TEXTURES. Make the changes to the files in this folder with your drawing program, run PicPac as described below, then copy the new compressed files directly into your EAW directory (usually in C:\Program Files\Microprose Software\European Air War). When EAW finds the new file in the directory, it will automatically use it instead of the defaults. If EAW is not using your new plane file, recheck to make sure you've followed all the steps properly.

As far as I can see, it doesnt prohibit the use of the textures in another game. And I don't think it is ethically wrong either, since we're not cracking or hacking Microprose's property here.
But if it turns out that this is illegal, then I'll withdraw my texture pack.

In case someone wonders why I did the texture pack: simply because EAW is, imho, the best looking WW2 sim out there. I like the "cartoonish" look, and maybe with this pack AH can also look nearly as good. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Compare no-icons fighting in EAW and AH. EAW is graphically better for that.
Pretty good from a two year old game using 8bit 256-colour graphics!

Camo, I am definitely not a lawyer, only an engineer with only a basic class in copyright and patent laws. But I would be suprised if HTC could use these textures in a supported terrain set (ie an official arena), since a case could be made that HTC is making a profit off of copyrighted material, without owning the rights.
I wouldn't say withdraw them, but don't be suprised if HTC has concerns about using them in an online arena.

Yep - I just made them to enjoy the best looking ground textures I know. If someone else wants to use them, great! If HTC would use them online, that would be even better, but I think that will only be a wet dream... (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Not cool to use other peoples art... Use these tiles to give you an idea of how the assocations work but get your own sample..
Thats why I redid Luzon.. I felt guilty using Squirrel's sample

10Bears, I've edited the textures quite a bit, these are not EAW textures 1:1. I could say they are "based on the EAW textures". But yes, I know what you mean.
And yep, I upped them to 16.7 million first. When they were ready, I resized and saved them in the proper format.
I won't use these "EAW textures" for my Finland terrain, but I will most probably use them as the base for the final textures, since I like the way I managed to get them tile nicely. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) We'll see.

Hey Camo I have a question for you. I am new to this, and I was wondering, Can I still ues the AH snow texture when I have the EAW texture dl? If so, how? Also, the AH seditor only has about 7 or so texture choices, and the EAW file seems to have 17. Do I only get to use the first 7? If you could lend me a hand that would be great.

No, the snow texture has been replaced with the city texture. Of course, you can replace the #16 texture with the AH snow and edit #17 manually so the snow tiles well.

There are two kinds of textures: Base textures (grass, forest, sea, etc) and transition textures (grass/forest, grassy rock/farm, etc).
If you look at the list of textures on my initial post, you can see that textures 0-5 and 16 are the "base textures", the rest are "transition textures" that are used between the base textures so that they tile perfectly.
Notice that the snow texture has only one transition texture, grassy rock. So if you put any other kind of texture beside it, it will give a straight edge, just like the coastline does now.
Try the terrain editor and experiment! It is really easy!
