I heard today that there is a new Midway movie due out around Veteran's Day, Woody Harrell as Chester Nimitz. Anybody have info on this?
I heard about it last year, that's about all I've heard, its got a huge budget.

This site (https://www.navytimes.com/off-duty/military-culture/2018/08/28/midway-remake-to-start-filming-next-month-on-oahu/) has some info posted 8/18. Looks like the plan is to release it late this year.

Honestly, I thought the first Midway was kind of corny and not well made. plus there were too many scenes straight up taken from Tora Tora Tora. I'm hoping they do a better job this time.
Tora Tora Tora, quality would be an improvement.

Sure it can - by most movies. The original is awful.

I love the original Midway. I just ignore the corny love story.
It has the cast of doom: Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Robert Mitchum, Hal Holbrook, Toshiro Mifune, Cliff Robertson, Robert Wagner, Tom Selleck, Eric Estrada

It had scenes from 100 movies, but the acting and the music...along with the human drama conveyed...made it one of my all-time favorite movies. It is riveting in spite of its flaws.

Not knocking you, to each their own. I remember going to the theater and seeing it in I believe they called it Sensaround. No doubt it was full of great actors, but it was far from their best performances. One thing that I caught the first time I saw it was Henry Fonda telling Hal Holbrook, "I miss the flat lands." As he went on about his childhood home and a lake you could wade across during the rainy season. Nimitz grew up in Fredericksburg TX, in the Hill Country, it's not the flat lands and you don't wade across anything there during the rainy season. I enjoyed the actual flying and fighting part of the movie, but the rest was terrible.

I often wondered about that scene myself.
I love this movie. I saw it in the theater when I was three years old and still remember that experience.
The music was great. I used to reenact the opening scene in preschool with my friends. Ha ha. I know.
Anytime it was on HBO we were all glued to the tv.

If any of you get the chance to visit Fredericksburg TX... do so. The Pacific War Museum there is excellent. There is a lot of great things to see in that town. You can actually see a beach head with Jap foxholes and LVTs. Several aircraft and a real PT boat there also.

It used to be much better. When it was housed in the Steamboat Hotel it had a lot more exhibits than now. I don’t know why they changed (reduced) what was displayed after they expanded the museum.
I love Fredericksburg. Enchanted Rock is just up the road. An amazing place.

Yes it is well worth the visit and awesome place, Shuff forgot to mention they also have the very Japanese Midget Sub that washed up on the beach following the Pearl Harbor raid.

About a year ago, I ran into Hal Holebrook at a nursery near where we both live. We had a nice chat.

With what that trailer is hinting at, you could punch yourself in the potatoes and it would still be less painful than watching the movie.
Gotta admit, those are some nice looking aircraft though.

If it is anything like Dunkirk, it is going to be terrible.
I thought Dunkirk was a good movie, it wasn't an epic war movie in the sense of grand scale battles. It was done tastefully, focusing on the stories of a few people. Very good film.
