Title: 165-gallon tanks please!
Post by: Chalenge on April 09, 2019, 01:06:39 AM
Tillman says they were a big part of the Iwo VLR Mustangs mission.

I know our maps are big.. but the 2 tanks currently available are more than plenty for AH escort missions!

No they're not or I wouldn't ask.

Max cruise.

Max cruise.

Keep trying. Eventually you might come up with the answer I did. More fuel!

:headscratch: How big are the current ones?  A November jug can get what, an hour 20 or so in the MA?  At alt, it'd be a lot more.  How much time do you need?(!)

Enough to make more than a single pass on B17s playing cat and mouse over their own HQ and still make it home.

Just flew a long arsed mission on the current MA map from my rearmost base to the bish HQ. Two 150 gal drops and after 15k normal power. At 25k max cruise. Even powering up over the HQ for 5 minutes to engage imaginary bandits in order to protect my imaginary buffs, I still had enough fuel to resume max cruise home for 80 mins. If I hadn't received an AAA pilot wound, I'd have made it back.  :D

That's a Jug and not a P-51. The OP concerned VLR Mustangs, not Thunderbolts.

I have a few pilot manuals I have downloaded over the years.  The P-38L and the P47 could use 165 gallon tanks.  We only have 150 gal tanks in game.  I put in a wish for the larger tanks a couple years ago.  According to the P-51D manual I have, the Mustang normally used 75 gallon tanks, but could use 110 gallon tanks if necessary.

I am trying to read the article you linked, but the page won't load right now.

In any case, the Mustang with 75 gallon tanks should be comparable to all the P-47 models except the N. You throw in cruise settings, and you should get much better range.

I have seven different browsers and that page loads right up in any one of them.

I have all of the manuals and fly the P-51 by the book when I can, and as I have to otherwise (just like they did in WWII). I think I know how to get the most out of the fuel I have, yet I still asked for more. The larger tanks are historical and I have a need for them.

BTW, that item is not written by just anyone off the streets, or a nerdy flight sim addict. That's Barret Tillman, who is a widely recognized aviation authority on World War II. Another man that backs up this claim is General Curtis LeMay who commanded operations on Iwo. I would listen to these two over any other authority on the subject.
