I think a longer war but in the end the same result, the US was always going to win unless they had just abandoned the pacific. By the end of the war the US had a ridiculous number of ships, floating dry docks, aeroplanes galore and all the oil in the world. No matter how much esprit and skill the Japanese aviators had they were going to get steamrolled in the end.

In the movie Tora! Tora! Tora! - Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto saying, “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.” might of been fiction but was factual.
