Title: Cross Country Personal Messages
Post by: DLXIRON on August 11, 2019, 02:05:06 PM

I had not played in four or five weeks, jump on the game and killed the wrong socially retarded misfit.  Three, two, one and here comes the pms explaining to me what an absolute piece of garbage I am.  Why is this even a feature in the game???  I see absolutely zero merit in it other than running off players.  I have even had them get me on personal voice ranting obscenities.  Can we please just disable it already???

To squelch a player, simply type ".squelch GameID" into the radio text bar using the player's game id. To unsquelch, type in ".unsquelch GameID".

No it is not because if reporting something actually had some consequences people would not feel so comfortable rage pming people all the time.  They should have no opportunity to contact me with out me approving or allowing it.  Just kill the feature and we solve the problem for eveyone!

To squelch a player, simply type ".squelch GameID" into the radio text bar. It's probably worth the minuscule effort. Also, try de-tuning 200. If the PMs bother you (and I guess I can't blame you) then 200 is probably a bother, as well. You have the power.  :D

There was one player that I would do that to EVERYTIME I logged on. Run through the roster to see if he was on, and squelch him if he was. I wouldnt wait for him to type at all. This player would take the fun out of the game as soon as he started typing. He is no longer playing..... was kicked out of the game imagine that.  :D

It works, so does the .report. I just wish the punishments were made a bit more public the the rest of the players would see that it works and that there ARE consequences to their actions, even in a game.

The report feature works great. You will not get feedback but it does work.

Understood.  Why should you even have to listen to that in the first place?  I suppose it's possible to insert a step in the PM process - "Oldman has sent you a pm, do you wish to accept?"
We have that with the ride-along feature.

But I doubt that would solve the problem.  If you've just killed, say, Oldman (and who hasn't?) and you get an "Oldman has sent you a pm, do you wish to accept?", you might reasonably assume that the pm says "Congrats Dougie!" and click on the "yes" button to bathe in glory.

Report and squelch.. if they continue, id assume it would be dealt with.  I kind of like when they get mad at me, so i vote to keep open communication.  Ill also get friendly PM'd too asking about settings, or how i accomplished something.  No need to remove it from the game.

I have friends on other teams.  Sometimes we like to PM and catch up.

My advice: Grow thicker skin, use the squelch command.

Put of curiosity if you report someone for a voice pm is it recorded and sent for review? Or just text

both, it also records texts of others not involved and if they're also violating tos they will also be dealt with, if i remember correctly.  I think the game records the last 5 of 10 minutes but dont quote me on it.  so reporting right away is important.

like others say I will also pm other players, to bs or whatever.  sometimes i get pm's telling me blah, blah, blha crappy players, i always replay on 200 and never 1 to 1.  but if it's just a I should not have been killed and it's not insulting to me, I dont report it.  I understand sometimes people need to blow steam and I consider that normal.  been many years since people tuned to me at least 10 years.

sometimes a pm can just be handle with a normal conversation.  like sometimes people think i picked them and I explain to them I didnt I was the one who was chasing them and another guy just happened to dive in and finish them off.  that's why I always replay on 200, if the person who finish them off wants to say it was him/her then it's up to them.  I never replay who it was on pm's.

1st most people know how to squelch another and turning off 200 will NOT stop the  PM's

and another thing is all a player has to do is log off and log back in to break the squelch.

Slippery slopes and thin skins.

We had a new player recently ask if squads are like clans. When he was answered yes, he got bent out of shape that this game supported KKK type associations. All of 200 went HuH!!  :huh If you don't like PM's just ignore them. If they persist and are vulgar, report that player. If they continue on 200 directly at you by name, report again. Very few players habituate 200 with premeditated vulgarity towards specific players. I know you can choose not to tune 200 to ignore that. It's also your choice to give any thought to what is in the text buffer unless you really are looking to be offended.

Being offended is free, you are a victim, so now you are empowered to be whatever it is you are unhappy about that day and make a stink to all in sundry becasue as a victim you have a get out of jail free card. Ignoring the fool may not make you feel empowered and getting any kind of payback but, it effects the fool since he wanted your reaction. By not ignoring the fool look where you are now.....

POTW has a wall of shame where we screen capture PM's and keep them for posterity to laugh at. Otherwise most of the time we just ignore the fool or pass along the fun on squad channel for a few yuks. We might even send him a squad salute every time that evening a pig towers him. But getting upset in a kiddie game at what some fool says, we all got real lives and most of us know this is a kiddie game with trolling "fools" to be ignored.

What? NO!

Rage PMs from the players you shot down are the crown jewels of social interactions in this game. I used to keep screenshots of all the rage PMs I was getting and browse them for my enjoyment when there was not much action going on.

I enjoy the cross country chat either discussing an engagement with an opponent or listening to the butthurt cries of someone who just got an unwelcome trip to the tower!

I'm not against some sort of option to limit it as in the ride along thing but please don't take it away completely as I think it's a big add to the camaraderie of the game.

I've gotten a couple over the years.  I've been accused of cheating a time or two too, but I think they were on 200.

That's how you know you've done something good.

As to the OP, squelch early, squelch often.  IMO cross country communication is a good thing, but my skin's pretty thick so that might be a factor.

It makes a fair bit of sense to me to have an option for "Guy sent you a PM.  Do you want to see it?" type functionality for people who don't want to see rage PMs.

The text side of it is easy enough to ignore but when someone tunes vox to you and screams in you ear is a bridge too far.

Sure you can squelch anyone but that doesnt stop it before it happens, and you can only squelch after the fact.

Maybe a popup for that side of things would make it somewhat better. Text pm's are not the same thing as having a player yell obscenities in your ear. I know it's happened a time or 3 to me in the past so I support the OP's wish. I dont want to see private vox stopped, just a warning or notice if you will before hand.

I like the idea that it would be similar to the join feature.

   YMMV!

If a player is a problem he should be reported. The report feature is on the roster for your convenience. Then HTC can see if it's friendly taunting, an occasional bad day situation, or if it's a toxic player that would improve the game by leaving.

To add to FLS' above post, when a player feels it a need to report another player that is or might be being abusive, the player doing the reporting should right-click the abusive player's gameid and click both the .report text and also right-click the .report voice, if they are doing it over Vox!

If I remember correctly, as guncrasher/semp posted earlier, you should use the 2 report options quickly,  because it does trigger a flag to record/copy the text buffer something like 10 to 15 minutes before the report through 10 to 15 minutes after the report....best I recall from how HTC explained it years ago....during one of the many many other threads started, just like this thread...
